The author's father, James Herbertson, after serving with distinction in the trenches on the Western Front, was, as a skilled linguist, appointed to the High Commission as Political Officer to the British High Commissioner, whom he later succeeded.The High Commission was wound up following American withdrawal of support and final Allied evacuation by 1930. Margaret Pawley was born in Allied-Occupied Rhineland. She served in the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in World War II, working in Egypt and Italy as an Intelligence Officer. She read History at Oxford University and worked in Malaya during the Emergency. She has taught at the Open University and is the author of four previous books, including Obedience to Instructions: FANY with the SOE in the Mediterranean.
