There seemed to be an acceptance that the level danger was tolerable in return for the speed of travel that was now available to them. Michael Foley spent much of his career as a primary school teacher and has always had a great passion for history - particularly relating to his home county of Essex. Now he concentrates on his writing and has published nineteen books on military and local history, including a history of the Sportsman's Battalion in the First World War, and a history of POWs held by the British from the distant past to the modern era. He also writes articles and stories for magazines. Many years ago Michael trained as a guard with British Railways and has maintained a great interest in the country's railway system ever since.
