Tom Tietsoort, a 1970 graduate from Freemont, Michigan high school was woken by his father, Frank, so he could take over his father's milk route. Tom explains he has already paid to spend his summer at a music camp to learn how better to play his cornet. His father expresses his disapproval but concludes that since it is already paid for, Tom should attend the camp. At the bus station, while waiting for his bus to the music camp, one of Tom's female classmates buys tickets to the same music camp. From then on a series of adventures and misadventures cause Tom to grow into authentic manhood.
