This book is the third of three volumes drawing together a collection of articles previously published in the BMJ covering contemporary issues in research. In this volume, the articles give key messages about the nuts and bolts of doing research, particularly with reference to how research findings should be reported. Each article also provides linked information and explicit evidence to support the statements made. The topics covered take a look at guidelines such as CONSORT, SPIRIT, GPP2, PRISMA and the IDEAL framework for surgical innovation. It also gives some guidance on economic evaluations, policy and service interventions and publication guidelines, as well as providing useful tips on preparing data for publication. Each article is written by an expert in the field and the volume brings together a masterclass in research reporting.

Professor Adrian Hunnisett is a biomedical scientist specialising in clinical biochemistry and haematology. He completed initial BMS training at Gloucester Royal Hospital and then graduated from Oxford Brookes University, completing research training in Oxford and London. He has worked in a variety of roles within the NHS and private medical sectors, most recently as Head of Clinical R&D at Southampton General Hospital. He is now Professor of Evidence-Based Healthcare at BPP University.
