This list is based upon a collection of manuscripts which once belonged to George Chalmers, of England. The volumes were pur chased by Peter Force, and with his collection came into the possession of the Library of Congress in 1867. Known as the vernon-wager Papers, they comprise the correspondences of two men, Sir Charles Wager and Edward Vernon. They cover a very interesting period in the history of the English operations in the West Indies. The expe dition against Cartagena and Cuba, a proposed expedition against Georgia and Florida, and the attempts to suppress piracy on the Spanish main, constitute the naval features. The slave trade, the commercial operations of the South Sea Company, and much relating to Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Nova Scotia, are matters of civil con cern. The light thrown upon the history of North America and. Upon British Colonial policy is important; as is also the development of naval regulation and policy when Great Britain was contesting with Spain the supremacy in the West Indies.
