Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Gut. 103 S. Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Xiero délia Francesca (i4i3?-i492) painted his masterpiece in fresco on the chancel walls of the Church of San Francesco in Arezzo. Based on a complex compilation of legend and history, the scenes fifteen in all tell the Stories of the True Cross, the sacred wood of Christ's Cross, from the time of Genesis, through the reign of Solomon, to the period after the Crucifixion when it began to work miracles. At Arezzo, Piero imbued each scene with a sense of classical dignity and permanence. Inspired by his deep knowledge of mathematics and his admiration for Plato's theory of ideal forms, Piero structured images around pure geometric shapes to lend an air of timelessness and permanence to each scene. Events are brought to a standstill, and meaning is transformed into holy celebration. Beyond these qualities, Piero brilliantly conveyed a sense of humanity at the heart of this story of the victory of Christianity over paganism. Gestures, while seeming posed, convey a profound inner sensitivity. Here, the expressions of even the most dignified figures reveal a specter of uncertainty; the ordinary co-exists with the sublime. Perhaps for all of these reasons Piero della Francesca's art has remained endlessly compelling to generations of admirers.
