Reseña del editor:
Classical Comedy- An Armoury of Laughter, Democracy's Bastion of Defence repudiates Aristotle's claim in Poetics, that tragedy was the jewel of fifth century democracy, arguing that the claim belongs to comedy, as a brilliantly entertaining defense of social values and standards. Tom Rothfield examines every aspect of classicism, analyzing comedy's origins, and structure, to demonstrate the reasons for classical comedy's universal and continued significance. He breaks down theatrical mechanisms, including the playhouse, masks, costumes, a comedian's comic skills, the playwright's inventive genius in plot development, character development, and effective jokes. Through his analysis, Rothfield demonstrates the classical framework, and classical comic criteria that provides an unrivalled model for contemporary theater.
Biografía del autor:

Buchbeschreibung Original hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. XXXV, 244 p., ill. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Allover very good and clean. - Foreword: Aristotle s reputation will not be diminished by the publication of this book. What could diminish the reputation of the man who gave Western civilization logic; who systematized knowledge into categories, and who first provided tools for critical intellectual analysis? But unlike God, who did His complete job in six days and behold, it was very good, Aristotle, the man, made mistakes and left gaps and imperfections. This book argues that one of Aristotle s imperfections is his analysis of the dramatic genres of tragedy and comedy. Tom Roth field is not the first to argue thus; Rothfield s originality lies in his scholarly exposition that, not only has comedy been undervalued and undermined by Aristotle and his subsequent disciples, but also that its importance as a Bastion of Democracy, specifically but not exclusively in Classical times, has remained unrecognized. According to Aristotle, tragedy is superior to comedy because the writers of comedy, the characters they create, and the audience they appeal to are all of a lower type - they are meaner persons. Perhaps Aristotle s elitist position in this matter was innate; perhaps it was partly the result of the troubled times in which he lived. Unlike Socrates, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes, who all lived a substantial part of their lives during the great period of Classical democracy under Pericles (457-429 B.C.), Aristotle was bom after the defeat of Athens by Sparta (404 B.C.), and lived to see the conquest of the Greek states by Philip of Macedon (from 388 B.C.).
