Shamsur Rahman Faruqi is an important writer and is a celebrated Urdu critic. He has edited and published the literary journal Shabkhoon and has authored a famous study of four volumes of the poet Mir Taqi Mir. He has also done another four-volume work on an Urdu oral romance, Dastan-e-Amir Hamza. He received the prestigious Saraswati Samman in 1996 for his contribution to Urdu literature. The Sun That Rose From The Earth is his English translation of his first collection of stories, Savar Aur Doosre Afsane.
