This is a study of the continuing presence of France in the South Pacific after the takeover of Tahiti, covering the colonialization of French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futana, as well as activities in the New Hebrides, Australia and New Zealand. It looks at the activities of missionaries, seamen, colonialists, entrepreneurs, administrators and islanders and places the South Pacific in the context of overall French expansion dealing with theories of colonialism and imperialism and evaluating the French impact on Oceania. The author declares his interest in images and reality - hopes for the French Pacific and the actual situation of French enterprises, rhetoric and propaganda.
