Críticas:
To understand Edward Said's Beginnings is to understand what is most importantly going on in contemporary critical theory, both in America and Europe. An immensely useful book by one of our most brilliant critics. -- Richard Poirier Readers...will be surprised, stimulated, instructed, impressed. Reseña del editor:
A "beginning," especially as embodied in much modern thought, is its own method, Edward Said argues in this classic treatise on the role of the intellectual and the goal of criticism. Distinguishing between "origin," which is divine, mythical, and privileged, and "beginning," which is secular and humanly produced, Said traces the ramifications and diverse understandings of the concept of beginning through history. A beginning is a first step in the intentional production of meaning and the production of difference from preexisting traditions. It authorizes subsequent texts-it both enables them and limits what is acceptable. Drawing on the insights of Vico, Valery, Nietzsche, Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Husserl, and Foucault, Said recognizes the novel as the major attempt in Western literary culture to give beginnings an authorizing function in experience, art, and knowledge. Scholarship should see itself as a beginning-as a uniting of theory and practice. Said's insistence on a criticism that is humane and socially responsible is what makes Beginnings a book about much more than writing: it is about imagination and action as well as the constraints on freedom and invention that come from human intention and the method of its fulfillment.

Buchbeschreibung Originalbroschur. Zustand: Gut. 414 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). Einband berieben. - The kernel-essay of Beginnings was written during the winter of 1967-8; more of it developed in 1968 and 1969, and by the winter of 1972-3 most of it was completed. Published first in 1975, Beginnings was one of a series of critical books forming what a distinguished scholar has called the genre of "uncanny criticism," that is, criticism not primarily based on the traditions, common-sense conventions and, we should add in honesty, pieties (as opposed to the practice) of historical or philological scholarship. Uncanny criticism was, J. Hillis Miller said, "a labyrinthine attempt to escape from the logic of words," it often leads "into regions which are alogical, absurd . where it resists the intelligence almost successfully." He sums up all these notions by saying that for the uncanny critics: the moment when logic fails in their work is the moment of their deepest penetration into the actual nature of literary language, or of language as such. It is also the place where Socratic procedures will ultimately lead, if they are carried far enough. The center of the work of the uncanny critics is in one way or another a formulation of this experience which momentarily and not wholly successfully rationalizes it, puts it in an image, a narrative, or a myth. ("Stevens' Rock and Criticism as Cure, II," The Georgia Review, Summer 1976). ISBN 023105937x Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550. Artikel-Nr. 1059872
