Buchbeschreibung Zustand: Antiquarian. Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1981. XXXVI,51p. Original blue cloth with dust wrps. Dust wrps a bit worn and reapired with acid free adhesive tape. A few pencil markings and annotations. Review loosely inserted. Signature and a few scholarly notes in pencil on free endpaper. This book 'has a great deal to offer (.) to anyone with an interest in the learning or teaching of Greek palaeography. (.) This is a reader, not an introduction to palaeography. B. has decided to use the available space in the most economical way by giving three or four samples of handwriting per page (?). This has several important advantages: related scripts can be grouped together for comparison, a large number of different scribes and types of hand can be represented, and the complexity of the development of Greek scripts can be tellingly brought out. Of course there are corresponding disadvantages: some of the samples of text are very small which make them less suitable for use in a class than the whole-page specimens in readers of conventional design. (?) One of the most impressive features of B.?s book is the wealth of information provided in extremely compressed form in the notes. (?) Throughout one has a strong sense of B.?s scrupulous care, good judgement and scholarly caution. No words are wasted, but there is much to be learned from her modest but authoritative commentary.? (P.E. EASTERLING in The Classical Review (New Series), 1984, p.297-98). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover. Antiquarian. Artikel-Nr. 35268
