Buchbeschreibung Paperback. Zustand: Gut. 288 p. In good condition. Slightly discolored. - Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was bom in the Province of San Juan, Argentina, in 1811. A statesman, essayist, biographer, and poet, he is best remembered for his devotion to improving education in Argentina, a topic about which he wrote extensively, as well as for his polemic Facundo. In 1827, as Argentina s civil war raged, he joined the army, and was thrown in jail. He escaped to Chile, where he Eved in exile for two years, and to which he would return many times over the next several decades. He was back in Sanjuan in 1829, when Juan Manuel de Rosas became governor of the Buenos Aires province. In 1839, Sarmiento published Prospecto de un establecimiento de education para señoritas dirigido por D. Domingo F. Sarmiento, and in 1845 he published two biographies, General Fray Félix Aldao and Civilización y barbarie: Vida de Don Facundo Quiroga, popularly known as Facundo. The following year he began a journey that would take him to Europe, the United States where he met the educator Horace Mann and other parts of Latin America. In 1849 he published a book on his travels and Educación popular, which was influenced by Mann, and in 1850 Argirópolis, in which he attacked the Rosas regime, and his autobiography, Recuerdos de provincia. Over the next few years, he served as public relations officer of the Argentine army, Chile s director of education, senator and then governor of San Juan, and Argentina s ambassador to the United States. He published several more books, including Ambas Américas and Vida de Abrán Lincoln. In 1867 he translated the Life of Horace Mann into Spanish, and the following year Mary Peabody Mann s English translation of Facundo was published under the title Life in the Argentine Republic in the Days of the Tyrants; or, Civilization and Barbarism. That same year, 1868, Sarmiento was named president of the Argentina Republic, a post he held until 1874. He was appointed director of the schools of the province of Buenos Aires in 1875 and general superintendent of Argentina s schools in 1881. Sarmiento died in 1888.
