Beschreibung:

Folio (53 x 39.5 cm), iv, 42 pp., 24 coloured maps (10 double-page), publishers brown half morocco over printed boards, covers lightly stained, 7 maps with small loss to blank upper margin only, a very good copy. Attractive early twentieth century atlas showing the provinces of China. The index has some 10,000 entries. Both the maps and index are bilingual. 'Like the system of postal romanization that this map uses for transliteration of Chinese names, the work is both a product and a tool of Western commercial and political expansion into China. Around 1917 the editors compiled the map, probably with the assistance of unnamed Chinese collaborators, under the auspices of the Far Eastern Geographic Establishment, Shanghai. This institution, which operated from 1915 to 1929, was one of the many organisations run by foreign sojourners who flocked to Shanghai in search of profit and adventure after the First Opium War and the designation of the city as a treaty port in 1843. Dingle, who was an Englishman by birth and a journalist by profession, [used some of the same maps] in the New Atlas and Commercial Gazetteer of China. Although at least one reviewer criticized this volume for not including information on the physical geography of China, Dingle and Fruin's primary concerns were not those of academic cartographers but rather those of expatriate businessmen' (All Under Heaven). Dingle was an interesting character who later emigrated to the United States using the Chinese name Ding Le Mei, and using his experiences in a Tibetan monastery, developed a form of Yoga called the Science of Mentalphysics and set up a teaching and retreat centre in Joshua Tree, California. Second edition, presentation copy, of this triumph of modern Chinese cartography, inscribed on the half-title, "To L. G. Shale, May our association grow in such a manner that what we do may multiply for good. Edwin Dingle (Ding Lemei). Los Angeles, Calif. Aug. 25/36". Edwin John Dingle (1881-1972), known in Chinese as "Ding Le Mei", was a journalist and publisher based in Hong Kong and Shanghai in the early 20th century who undertook mapping expeditions throughout the Chinese hinterland. His atlas and gazetteer, compiled by his team of experts at the Far Eastern Geographical Establishment, provides detailed maps of every province, incorporating the most recent surveys of still largely uncharted regions. These are accompanied by maps showing the railway system, forests, and coal resources. Dingle, via his connections with Shanghai's finance media, was also able to source and include a large amount of trade and economic output data to appeal to foreign firms operating in Republican China's emerging markets. Alongside his contribution to Chinese mapmaking, Dingle is known for founding Mentalphysics, a philosophical practice with a worldwide reach. He first encountered these ideas during a a trip to Tibet in 1909, recounted in his Across China on Foot (1911), when he studied breathing techniques designed to channel the body's energy and develop heightened states of consciousness. In 1928, he found the Institute of Metalphysics in Los Angeles; the recipient of this copy, now untraced, was likely one of his close disciples. Large folio. 25 colour maps (2 folding), numerous maps, tables and charts in text. Original leather-grained black cloth over heavy bevelled boards, raised bands, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, front board elaborately blocked in blind with gilt title, decorative blue endpapers, linen hinges. Small numerical ticket at top-left corner of front pastedown. Binding skilfully refurbished at joints, spine ends and tips, a number of minor paper repairs, margins typically lightly toned, contents overall clean and fresh. A large, heavy and precariously constructed book that is consequently often found in shabby condition; this copy has survived far better than most and has benefited from a little judicious restoration, now presenting and handling well. Very good. Artikel-Nr. 149277
