to 'Most Esteemed Sir', in Italian with translation, saying he "will willingly give you the letter of recommendation. to see the House of Lords but as regards the friends that you wish to take there, it is indispensible that you give me their names, provided of course that they are Italian", 2 sides 8vo., 35 Queen's Gate, South Kensington, 26th February (Translation) 35 Queen's Gate South Kensington London, 26th February 1882. Most Esteemed ['Pregiatissimo'] Signore, I will willingly give you the letter of recommendation you desire for admission to see the House of Lords, but as regards the friends that you wish to take there, it is indispensible that you give me their names, provided of course that they are Italian. Please be assured, most esteemed Signore, of my especial regard. F L Menabrea In 1840 Charles Babbage visited Turin and made a presentation on his Analytical Engine. Menabrea took notes and worked out the steps, to be typed in on punched cards, in solving algebraic equations. Printed in French in Geneva in 1842, these were the first published computer programs. Ada, Countess of Lovelace, translated his account with her further notes in 1843. In the wide spectrum of fighters for Italian Unity, Menabrea was on the centre right. In his years as Prime Minister there were many crises. He resisted the French attempt to allow the Pope to retain temporal power, but felt he had to curb Garibaldi's invasion of Naples in 1869. In 1882 he went on to be Ambassador to Paris. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 56331
