Plate (numbered 12): Forest Landscape with castle. With collector's mark L.L. (L. Lepingle, ref: Lugt 1731, pre-1903). Etching on verge type hand laid paper. No watermark visible, but no doubt 18 th c. paper. Description: 17th c. etchings of Antonie van Waterloo are scarse. This is a nice dark print, with relatively little plate wear. We had this etching assessed as probably an early Ottens edition. The Ottens': Joshua, Reinier and Reinier jr. acquired and owned plates from earliest 1717 till 1784, and published probably between 1726-1765. The indicated date of 1726 is arbitrary and based on the excellent quality of this print.Artists and Engravers: This plate was etched by the reknown Anthonie (Anthony) Waterloo. Although etched he is known to have added accents to his work by burin and other engraving techniques as well. Anthonie Waterloo (1609-1690) is born in Lille, but his family moved to Amsterdam probably to escape religious persecution. He was a painter and etcher and famous for his landscapes (136 items). He developed his own style, probably as an auto-didact. Although Waterloo traveled widely, many of his landscapes were probably imagined in the studio and were strongly influenced by the work of other landscapists. Condition: Fine. Excellent dark impression, with little plate wear. General age related toning and light soiling. Cut just outside plate mark as usual. This item has not been washed, cleaned, bleached, restored.
