Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

Good. Closed tear extending one half inch into printed area from upper margin professionally repaired on verso. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Verso reinforcements at fold intersections. Exhibits pinholing at corners and some toning. Light soiling. Blank on verso. Size 36.5 x 46.25 Inches. This is a 1958 map of the world. Presented on a semi-elliptical projection, the map depicts the world from Midway Island in the Pacific Ocean to Fiji and from the Arctic Ocean and Greenland to Cape Horn. The world map occupies the top half of the sheet and focuses on foreign troop strength in continental Europe, using pictographs to symbolize the soldiers. At this point, it was commonly believed that the Cold War would turn into a Hot War over central Europe, most likely in Germany, between forces of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc and NATO. Hence over 300,000 American soldiers were stationed in western Europe, with 225,000 in West Germany alone. The American troops were supplemented by another 100,000 British and French soldiers. Across the border in East Germany, an equal force of 425,000 Soviet troops were stationed, with more in Hungary, Romania, and Poland. The Bottom Half The bottom half of the sheet provides summaries of twelve of the past week's (January 9 to 15) most important global news stories, ranging from the United States to Cambodia. The topics addressed include student rocket launches, a change to American college football scoring, a change in Venezuela's cabinet, an Indonesian plea to Egypt to sell weapons, and the Cambodian decision to recall their ambassador from Moscow. Other historical content includes a short paragraph marking the inauguration of coast-to-coast telephone service in the United States, a short biography of the French painter Edouard Manet, and a short biography of Samuel Colt and his history-making revolver. Publication History This map was created and published by News Map of the Week, Inc. in January 1958.
