Infinity, self-image, sexuality and compulsive repetition are themes that she seizes on from the late 1950s, with the first iterations of her paintings Infinity Nets, large canvases covered with an endless pattern. made up of small dots. These works, which the artist describes as "obsessive", result from the psychological instability from which she suffers. She went to live in New York from 1958 to 1973, where she managed to impose herself on the artistic scene thanks to in tune with the times, between happenings, sexual revolution and demonstrations against the Vietnam War. Between East and West, his works combine psychedelia and American pop culture of the 1960s with invasive repetitive motifs. Her installations are often real performances, where she covers the smallest space with polka dots, phallic protuberances, or an infinite set of mirrors. Yayoi Kusama is considered a one-of-a-kind artist on the contemporary scene and her works are exhibited by the most prestigious museums around the world. In 1993, she represented Japan at the 45th Venice Biennale. In 1998-1999, a major retrospective titled Love Forever. Yayoi Kusama 1958-1968 is shown in the United States and Japan (at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo). In 2012, his work was the subject of a new retrospective at the Tate Modern in London, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Center Pompidou in Paris and the Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York. She has received numerous awards and decorations, such as the Asahi Prize in 2001, the Order of Arts and Letters in 2003, the Praemium Imperiale, painting prize awarded by the Japanese Association of Fine Arts in 2006, and the Order of Cultural Merit. Yayoi Kusama is known worldwide for her avant-garde work on themes such as infinity, self-image, sexuality and repetition. Spotted on the New York art scene of the 1960s, she created works combining psychedelia, pop culture and repetition of motifs, in the form of installations and series of paintings. This new edition of the monograph published in 2000, which remains one of the most exhaustive studies of his work, is enriched with a text by Catherine Taft and a series of new poems by the artist. - Akira Tatehata is a poet and art critic, winner of the 2005 Takami Jun Award for Literature.
