THE VINLAND MAP AND THE TARTAR RELATION SKELTON MARSTON & PAINTER 1965 W/DJ & MYLAR NEAR FINE CONDITION. By way of explanation about this large book, I quote from the flap of the dust jacket: Because evidence concerning the Viking discovery of North America in the tenth and eleventh centuries is so incomplete, investigations of this area of history will be substantially aided by the discovery of new documents. Such is the claim made for the previously unknown manuscripts here published for the first time. There are two documents copied about 1440 from much earlier originals, now lost. The first is an account of Friar John of Plano Caprini s Mission to the Mongols in 1245-47. The second is a world map, including the western ocean, with delineations of Iceland, Greenland, and a land mass named Vinland which represents the North American mainland as known to the medieval Norsemen. I am pleased to offer for your consideration a near fine copy of: The Vinland Map and the Tartar Relation by R.A. Skelton, Thomas E. Marston and George D. Painter, collaborators representing the Yale Library and the British Museum. This very large hard cover book (9 ½ x 11 ¾ inches, 291 pages) is bound in red marbled paper covered hard boards with a bright red decorative title panel on the spine. The book was published by the Yale University Press, the First Edition in its Third Printing of December 1965 (so stated). The book is protected by a printed dust jacket which in turn is sheathed in a mylar cover. The list of illustrations includes some pull-out bifold maps. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. With the mylar sheath on the dust jacket, it is in near fine condition itself, without any real wear or damage. The hard covers are clean and bright and the gilt titles on the spine equally so and quite attractive. Inside, the only marking I found was the aforementioned bookplate; the interior pages and plates are clean and bright from cover to cover. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 2919
