"The treatment of dry rot, death watch beetle and other pests of timber has changed radically throughout the twentieth century. Timber decay involves more than a simple relationship between wood and pesticides; it is also a complex series of interactions between wood, decay organisms and the building environment. This book seeks to explain these interactions, and their implications for timber conservation. It commences with a discussion of timber as a living material, so that the natural limitations of decay organisms and the decline in building timber durability may be understood. The second section deals with decay organisms and their habitat requirements. This section explains, amongst other topics, why dry rot is called dry rot, and how the name has led to an extraordinary confusion between myth and fact. The next section moves on to the building as an environment for timber and discusses the ways in which wood responds to moisture change. The book ends with an approach to timber decay which integrates knowledge of the decay organism, its requirements and natural predators with appropriate and targeted chemical treatments. This section shows how a greater understanding of the subject can minimise and frequently avoid destruction or potentially harmful interventions, and maximise the retention of original building timbers. ' Timber Decay in Buildings' is the first book to tackle all the issues relating to timber decay. It presents the facts and explores timber decay problems through case studies. These are illustrated with clear self-explanatory photographs for the reader to use as a diagnostic aid. The methods outlined here are intended to reduce unnecessary damage frequently caused to buildings by uninformed timber treatments, and form the basis of the timber conservation methods advocated by English Heritage and Historic Scotland.".
