Unmarked hardcover, no jacket, gilded top edge. First edition, believed first printing (see photos of title and copyright pages, Macmillan listed additional printings on copyright page in this era). Light to moderate wear to cover, with small patch of misc. soiling to back. Cloth wearing more at top of spine than bottom. Some signs of light soiling on cover. Cracked gutter with binding visible at first few pages, at rear flyleaf and a few additional places internally. Owner's stamp on front end paper and flyleaf, oddly also appears stamped in text block three times at a later internal page. Tissue over frontispiece appears to be missing and has left a fragment of paper where it had been attached between the pages. Inscription in fountain pain (now light brown) in a fair hand on flyleaf. Price in red pen on flyleaf and, oddly, above text block on a later page. Some soiling to rear flyleaf. A few lines of text have been underlined in red pen on page 214.
