"Over the past three years, traveling around the country giving graduate level seminars to American acupuncturists and practitioners of Chinese medicine, I have become acutely aware of the general lack of clarity in American practitioners concerning the methodology of our profession. For me, one of the greatest values of Chinese medicine is its time-tested methodology. To a large extent, this methodology is based on the logic inherent in the Chinese language. In Chinese, Chinese medicine is extremely clear and logical. However, in translation, this logic and clarity are often lost. Often the immediately perceived connections between two Chinese words do not carry over to the two (or more) English words chosen to translate them. Nigel Wiseman and Andrew Ellis, also aware of this problem, have attempted to rectify it by creating a standard English vocabulary which hews as closely as possible to the Chinese in their Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine. Although many may feel uncomfortable, as I myself do, with some of their neologisms, their endeavor correctly addresses the main problem with the teaching and practice of Chinese medicine in the United States today."
