According to a biography by Christopher Harter on the Amistad Research Center website, Theresa Woodruff was an educator, school administrator, and the wife of the African-American artist Hale Woodruff. Born in 1903, in Topeka, Kansas. She taught at Lincoln High School in Kansas City until she married Woodruff in 1934. Following the family's moved to Atlanta, Georgia, she began teaching at Oglethorpe Elementary School on the Atlanta University Campus, where her husband had been recruited to establish the university's art department. The family moved to New York City when Theresa and Hale received fellowships from the General Education Board and the Rosenwald Foundation, respectively. She taught at Walden School, a private elementary school while in New York and received her M.A. and Ed.D. degree from NYU in 1956. She accepted a position and was one of the first African-American professors at the City College of the City University of New York, retiring from that position in 1970. She was active in Alpha Kappa Alpha, the Zeta Boule of Sigma Pi Phi, the Harlem Hospital Auxiliary, the Harlem Dowling Children's Agency, and Girl Friends, Inc. *OCLC* locates a single copy of this dissertation, not surprisingly, at NYU.
