Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

2], 76, [2] pages. Illustrations (some in color). Endnotes. Maps. This issue includes the following articles: Introducing Leah Thomas as incoming Editor-in-Chief [this is Mr. Sander's last issue as Editor-in-Chief! and there is a noted "From the Retiring Editor-in-Chief"]; The Maps of Claude Bernou (c. 1638-1716) ; At the Edge of Empires: The Baltic States in Antique Maps; Using Artificial Neural Networks to Map COVID-19 Social Media Sentiment; The General Land Office and the Rector-Conway Surveying Dynasty; From Sao Paulo to Zoom: Advice for Hosting a Virtual History of Cartography Symposium; and Ruscelli's Portrait at the Art Institute of Chicago. Leah M. Thomas is Editor of The Portolan and Assistant Professor of English at Virginia State University in Petersburg. Her research explores the geographic imagination in cartography and narrative of the long eighteenth century. Thomas F. Sander retired from the Army as a Colonel in 1996 after 30 years of distinguished service. He then started 19 years, and still counting, of volunteering his services to the history of discoveries and cartographic community. Tom has served as of the Washington Map Society Vice-President in 2000-2001 and President 2001-2002. He has been editor of The Portolan: the Journal of the Washington Map Society since 1997. As editor, Tom changed the thrice-yearly The Portolan from a black-and-white, to a multi-colored publication, increasing its size from approximately 40 pages in each issue to 80 pages. Founded in 1979, The Washington Map Society is a United States based organization supporting map collecting, and the history, science and art of cartography. The Society (or WMS) has about 400 members drawn from throughout the United States with about 50 members. About 60% live outside the Washington DC, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia radius, confirming the importance of our journal, The Portolan, and the WMS E-newsletter. WMS advances its goals by convening periodic speaker events, organizing field trips, publishing a cartographic journal (The Portolan) three times yearly, and by annually sponsoring the Ristow Prize competition recognizing research achievement in cartographic history. Phylodynamics, an increasingly popular statistical framework to infer pathogen transmission dynamics from genetic data, remains overlooked in animal health research. This restricts our ability to design more effective disease control strategies. Phylodynamics can be valuable when investigating the determinants of disease spread, allowing the better targeting of animal populations for disease control and reducing the impact of epidemics. The wildlifelivestockhuman interface is critical for disease emergence; thus, promoting phylodynamics at this interface should improve our ability to manage complex epidemics. There is a critical need to improve capacity-building efforts for infectious disease detection in hard-to-sample populations, such as wildlife.…
