Artikelbeschreibung vom Verkäufer

First printing of the true first edition - published as a paperback original (PBO). There was also a hardcover issue aimed mainly at public libraries. Both issues are uncommon. ***A very good copy in illustrated glossy card covers. Edges of covers slightly rubbed and creased. No reading creases to the spine. No tears. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges lightly foxed. Internally also very good, with no previous ownership details. There is some sporadic foxing to the top and fore edge of the page block, and some very light foxing to the inner covers and first and last few pages. Internally the pages are clean. No tears or creases. ***349 pages including Appendices, Notes and Index at the back of the book. 216mm x 138mm. ***Contents: Preface, Acknowledgments, 1. Nuclear safety: some reasons why siting is important, 2. Power station planning in the UK, 3. Remote siting policies in the UK, 4. Relaxed siting policies in the UK, 5. Three case studies of UK nuclear power station planning, 6. Siting reactors in the US, 7. Demographic characteristics of nuclear power station sites in the UK and US, 8. Optimal siting from a public perspective, 9. Summary, conclusions and recommendations, Bibliography, Index. ***'Nuclear power is now regarded as essential to survival in the twenty-first century. But the safety of nuclear power stations is a highly controversial topic, and where they will be sited is a most vital question. In this independent critique, based on four years of research, Stan Openshaw demonstrates that, whilst major reactor accidents are expected to be rare events, the nuclear industry cannot guarantee that accidents affecting large numbers of people will not occur. Current conditional assurances of safety exclude the possibility of terrorist attacks, sabotage and human error. Nuclear safety is a matter of faith.' (Quotes taken from the back cover ***On 26 April 1986, the no. 4 reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, located near Pripyat, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union (now Ukraine), exploded. With dozens of direct casualties, it is one of only two nuclear energy accidents rated at the maximum severity on the International Nuclear Event Scale.) ***A first printing of the true first edition of this book - published as a paperback original. All editions of this book are uncommon. Interestingly, the book was published in the same year as the Chernobyl disaster! ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
