Beschreibung

Beschreibung:

First editions, first states of each title comprising the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Octavo, 3 volumes, original red cloth, folding map in the rear of each volume. Near fine in excellent dust jackets with light rubbing and wear. An exceptional set. The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II in letters to his son, "and finally, having polished it to his own satisfaction, published it as a trilogy from 1954 to 1955, a volume at a time, impatiently awaited by a growing audience. It is considered one of this century s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age. It seems destined to become this century s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasure." (Eyre, 134-35). It has went on to become the third best selling novel of all-time with 150 million copies sold. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 136748

Hardcover. Zustand: New. During his travels across Middle-earth, the hobbit Bilbo Baggins had found the Ring. But the simple band of gold was far from ordinary, it was in fact, the One Ring - the greatest of the ancient Rings of Power. Sauron, the Dark Lork, had infused it with his own evil magic, and when it was lost, he was forced to flee into hiding. But now Sauron's exile has ended and his power is spreading anew, fueled by the knowledge that his treasure has been found. He has gathered all the Great Rings to him, and will stop at nothing to reclaim the One that will complete his dominion. The only way to stop him is to cast the Ruling Ring deep into the Fire-Mountain at the heart of the land of Mordor - Sauron's dark realm. Fate has placed the burden in the hands of Frodo Baggins, Bilbo's heir.and he is resolved to bear it to its end. Or his own. Artikel-Nr. 9780739408254

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Three wonderful books, each book is a bright red cloth bound hard-back, with gorgeous gilt titles on the spine. Each book comes with its own, not price clipped, dust jacket. Some wear to jackets around the edges. As these books are used, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. The three books are the revised, second edition, published 1970, fifth impression, printed in Great Britain in 11 on 12 point Imprint type by Jarrold & Sons Ltd, Norwich. Published by George Allen & Unwin Ltd. The three books are in really good condition, all pages intact and nice tight bindings. Previous owners name signed on first blank page in pen and ink. If you thumb through each book the pages look like they have hardly been used or read, but the jackets as you can see from the photos do have some wear and tear around the bases, spines and corners, probably only to be expected when the books are over fifty years old. Please note for overseas buyers the shipping/postage price may increase from listed shipping/postage price depending on final destination. 1. THE RETURN OF THE KING: 440 pages and map is in good condition. 2. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING:423 pages, map is in good condition. THE TWO TOWERS: 352 pages and map in good condition. The Lord of the Rings is not a book to be described in a few sentences. It is an heroic romance, something which has scarcely been attempted on this scale since Spenser's Faerie Queene, so one can't praise the book by comparisons, there is nothing to compare it with. What can I say then? continues Richard Hughes, for width of imagination it almost beggars parallel, and it is nearly as remarkable for vividness and for the narrative skill which carries the reader on, enthralled, for page after page. By an extraordinary feat of the imagination Mr Tolkien has created, and maintains in every detail , a new mythology in an invented world. Artikel-Nr. 1878

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Lee, Alan (illustrator). Limited Edition. The First UK Printings Thus. published by Harper Collins, London in 1992. Large 8vos., 3 vols.; navy blue publisher's cloth with Tolkien's monogram symbol embossed in silver to upper boards; spines repeating the monogram with lettering and lining in silver, along with publisher's devices; decorative endpaper maps; together in the highly decorative wrappers, all unclipped (£17.99 to front flaps); illustrated throughout with frontispieces and numerous full-page illustrations in full colour by Alan Lee; The BOOKS are all in very near Fine condition. The WRAPPERS are all in very near Fine condition, with just a couple of tiny marks and scuffs; excellent overall. All wrappers are protected in removable Brodart archival covers. First UK editions thus, of Tolkien's celebrated and revered fantasy trilogy, which has become something of a cult classic, and one of the best-known works of the 20th century. Originally published the previous year as a one-volume omnibus, this edition is the first to feature Lee's captivating illustrations in the same three-volume format as the epic was originally published. Sadly lacking the publisher's slipcase. The set is here enhanced with the wonderfully enigmatic illustrations by Alan Lee, who portrays numerous sweeping scenes from the text, as well as characters such as Gollum, Gandalf and the elves, epic battles, trolls, dwarfs, orcs and much more. Lee went on to illustrate many other Tolkien works, including a 1999 edition of The Hobbit, the 2007 edition of The Children of Húrin, the 2017 edition of Beren and Lúthien, the 2018 edition of The Fall of Gondolin, and the 2022 edition of The Fall of Númenor. He was also employed as the concept artist on Peter Jackson's 2001 - 2003 'The Lord of the Rings' film trilogy. A wonderful gift set. Due to the weight of these three books, there will be extra international shipping costs to pay for - please make contact for further information regarding this . More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Artikel-Nr. ABE-1771233012496
