Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

London: Moxon, 1849. First edition. In three volumes, complete. 8vo. Dark green cloth decoratively blindstamped, gold titles. [xvi, preface and dedication], 480 464, 460 pp. including index. These books are from the personal library of William F. Sturgis (1782-1863) of Barnstable County, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Sturgis was a sea captain, engaged in the China trade and the booming fur trade on the Northwest coast of the United States. He died October 21, 1863 at the age of 81 leaving a great legacy including the famous Sturgis Library in Barnstable, renowned for its archival and genealogical works. He had bought the house, where he had been born and donated it to Barnstable to establish a public library for the village, along with his personal collection of 1,300 books and $15,000 to establish an endowment. These books are included in the Catalogue of the Sturgis Library (CSL), Barnstable, Mass. 1867-1877. Boston: W. F. Brown, 1877, p. 35. They are hand-numbered #912 and hand-dated June 1, 1868 on antique Sturgis Library bookplates. All boards are very scuffed, bumped. Volume I: tear along spine, front and rear hinges cracked, foxing to front endpapers and table of contents, chipping top of spine with .5 cm. loss of material, good condition. Volume II: Similar to Volume I, 7.5 cm. tear along spine cloth, fair condition. Volume III: Simlar to Volume 1, 3 cm. tear along spine cloth, fair condition.…
