Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

2002-2004. Complete four volume set: pp. xxxii,252; xxvii,323; xxix,337; xxix,433. Dust jacket fine with slight rubbing to edges only, vol. 4 slightly scuffed to rear panel. Hardback bindings fine; contents clean and tight, unmarked. A fine set in dustwrappers. "Sir Peter le Page Renouf (1822-97), a Guernseyman, was described by Lord Acton as 'the most learned Englishman I know'. The remarkable collection of his surviving letters, published in four volumes by University College Dublin Press between 2002 and 2004, covers Renouf's varied career from his days as a student in Oxford, his time as a lecturer in the 1850s at the new Catholic University in Dublin until after his retirement as Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum. In 1864, Acton helps to obtain a post for Renouf in England as Inspector of Schools. Although this work involved the most tedious administrative duties, Renouf still managed to keep up his Egyptological studies. In 1875, he and his wife travelled to Syria, Palestine and Egypt. His life changed dramatically in 1886 when he was appointed Keeper of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum, a post he held until his retirement in 1891. He spent the last years of his life on a translation of the Book of the Dead." Size: Large 8vo.…

Shopbeschreibung

We are taking a break while we re-locate ourselves and business. We move to a peaceful stretch of the River Lynher. We specialise in fine antiquarian and second-hand books with a strong interest in Natural History, particularly the New Naturalist Series. If you come across any issues when searching for a title please contact us via our email loe@loebooks.co.uk or telephone us on 01566 782528. Offers always welcome and given serious consideration. We are not a formal shop but visitors are welcome by appointment. We are situated about 9 miles south of Launceston, close to Bodmin Moor. It is a beautiful part of Cornwall, so even if you do not find the book you are looking for a visit is worthwhile for the countryside alone!…
