Artikelbeschreibung des Verkäufers

A mixed edition set of this beautifully illustrated historical work. Uniformly rebound in a lovely half calf binding. Collated using the binder's directions to the rear of volume III. 'Philip of Spain' plate is actually to page 259 of volume III. 'The Ratification of the Convention' plate is to the end of volume III. Lacking plate 50, the Battle of Crecy and The Portrait of King Henry IV to the 'Title' of volume II. Volume I is dated 1808, Volume II is dated 1806 and Volume III is a first edition of 1803. The third volume, as it is a first edition, has a slightly different title to volumes I and II. Volume I and II refer to the later published volume IV which continued from the commencement of hostilities in 1803. This comprehensive history discusses the monarchs, their politics, social uprisings, famous murders and more, from the earliest of times until the start of the nineteenth century. The work is told chronologically, with the first volume finishing at Richard II, the second volume until James II and the third until George III. The illustrations assist Lyttleton's comprehensive descriptions. Little is known about Lyttleton, and this is his best known work. Following these three volumes he wrote a continuation titled 'The Modern History of England, Continued from the Commencement of Hostilities in the Year 1803: Forming a Complete Historical, Biographical and Literary Chronicle of Modern Times'. Rebound, in a half calf binding with marbled covered boards. Externally, excellent with little to no shelfwear. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are age toned to edges. Occasional minor chips to the page edges. Scattered spotting, heavier to page 453 of volume III. Very Good.…
