Royal octavo 22.3x17.5 cm. Pp. (20) comprising of introductions and index; 868 columns, numbered (5-6)-868, (22) additional index. Some woodcut initials, illustrations of medical instruments, woodcut publisher's device on title-page, repeated enlarged on last page. HARDCOVER, bound in handsome modern stained full calf, spine richly decorated in gilt, crimson morocco lettering-piece lettered in gilt, sides blind tooled with various floral motifs. Title-page bears witness to previous, near contemporary owners, and a small ink stain; there is a single miniature wormhole, receding in size to micro size, at the blank margin of the first 20 leaves, well away from text; faint dampmark to last leaf. In fine condition. Excellent copy, mostly bright and crisp. ~ FIRST EDITION. Caspar Wolf (1532-1601). Three old, near contemporary signatures appear on title-page, one of which is clearly legible, that of Aloysij Rodulphi. A small oval stamp, faded light blue, that of The Library of the Surgeon General's Office, Washington D.C., appears nearby. This institution, later called the Army Medical Library, was the institutional medical literature repository of the U.S. Army Surgeon General from 1836 to 1956 when it was transformed into the National Library of Medicine. At the generous blank bottom margin at the end of Ad Lectorum, appears the iconic stamp of the Capuchins Order of Verona, illustrated woodcut. This stamp repeats on the very last page under the publisher's device whom it suits remarkably nicely. Later bookplate, that of Samuel M. Dodek, M.D., is pasted inside cover. Another evidence of previous, very old ownership, is the rather angry crossing out in fountain pen of 5 lines in one column, in what seems to be an utter disagreement with the written text. Nib of the fountain pen has left a miniature hole, so determined was the reader. Some copies of this book were bound together with a small Greek section, published the same year. This copy is not. Rare survival in uncommon good condition. A-1.
