Pressley (Catholic education, psychology, U. of Notre Dame) gives a turn-of-the century status report on comprehension instruction. He and Block (education, Texas Christian U.) then introduce and sum up the issues presented in 25 papers on theory-based new directions in CI beyond the traditional labels of literal, interpretative, and applied comprehension; methods belying the heuristic of simply transferring general skills to new contexts/ genres; and CI from preschool through college.
