Collection of 14 pamphlets bound in two volumes.

A collection of social, economic, and literary works by the pioneering social investigator, in the Eden family binding with his monogram at the head of the spine, and with "Miss Eden / the works of her father" inscribed on the front pastedown and front free endpaper of Volumes I and II respectively. Frederick Morton Eden (1766-1809) is renowned for his efforts to assess the living standards of the working classes. He spent his professional life in insurance, but the works in this collection demonstrate his energetic concern for practical philanthropy and social work. The Estimate of the Number of Inhabitants (1800) anticipated the UK's first official census of 1801, while the Observations on friendly societies (1801) indicates his commitment to the protective power of insurance. The collection equally attests to Eden's wide range of interests. His social and economic works sit alongside his Eight Letters (1800) and Address on the Maritime Rights (1807), both analyzing British trade during the Napoleonic Wars, and the cento to the memory of the late Viscount Nelson, a elegiac Latin epic. Eden had two daughters: Marianne (c. 1793-1859) and Caroline (c. 1801-1854). Caroline Eden married Vice Admiral Hyde Parker, who engaged the USS Constitution in battle, captained HMS Victory, and served as first naval lord at the Admiralty.
