This is an annual offer. made to an artist who we feel is at a pivotal point in their career to make a new work for exhibition and for the Collection. Andy Holden's response is a total work of art, including sculpture, painting, moving image, sound and performance, in an environment which is a sculpture in itself. Andy Holden is an artist in his early 30s (he turned 31 while installing the exhibition) who seems to live between times. MIIMS was an idea he and a group of friends explored while in their teens, writing their own manifesto for art practice. As such MIIMS is both a reality and a fiction, but then isn't history made up of fictions which become real through their telling? Holden's concern though is not for the past but for the future of art making, and this concern is far-reaching although rooted in the personal. It poses broad questions about the construction of society and communit.
