Neuware - Starting from the premise that supreme authority requires justification, and pointing out that from medieval times the authority of both Church and State has been deemed as delegated from God, Mr. Cameron investigates the relation between secular and religious authority and the role of the individual moral agent. If the highest authority derives from God, how are we to evaluate the claims of popes, kings, and the State The individual, through witness of the Spirit and his own moral perceptions, has the right and obligation to evaluate the institutions and commands of authority; Mr. Cameron finds validity in use of the concept of 'nature' as a moral criterion. Moral precepts are not, he argues, simply a matter of convention. It makes neither logical nor moral sense to set up a system that condones, for example, lying and murder, and he points to the Nuremberg trials as an illustration of the belief that man may not justify his wrongdoing as obedience to the State. In his final chapter, the author examines parochial education. As a philosopher and Catholic layman, he approves of the increasing secularization of social life. Separate schooling, an idea totally foreign to the early Church, is not in principle a Catholic requirement.

Neuware - The Director for the Medical Sciences at the Rockefeller Foundation tells in this book what medical research is, what the universities and foundations have done and should do about it, and of the kind of man who works at the frontiers of the unknown in order to push back the curtains of darkness at least a little in the endless search for truth. Dr. Gregg candidly discusses some of the shortcomings of the foundations and their methods, the obstacles to their and the universities' doing their job properly, the booby traps and temptations that like in their way. But here at firsthand is an account of the men of good will, with none of the sanctimoniousness that has often characterized philanthropic endeavors, of men who critically, earnestly, doggedly, and intelligently have labored in the heat of the day and from whose minds will come the advances of the future. 'This short book is addressed to the entire medical profession, to the medical student, to the student who contemplates entering medicine, and to many in the allied and basic sciences. It should be read by any who evince or profess an interest in medical research.'-Journal of the American Medical Association.

Neuware - The language, customs, and manners of scientists are frequently unintelligible to the rest of the population, and there is considerable danger that the ideas and forces that are moving mountains will be increasingly inaccessible tothose outside the laboratories. The peril of such a situation to a democracy, where understanding must be assumed to be fairly general, is probably as great in the realm of ideas as the physical danger of the instruments of destruction. Dr. Conant sets out to show how the gulf can be bridged. Instead of a series of assertions about science being ordered knowledge, or the classification of facts, he presents a historical view of a number of the great scientists, of what their generation knew of their subjects, of the problem they set out to examine, and of how they solved it. The reader is enabled to follow the scientific method at work, with all its limitations and wonders.

Terry of Plymouth, Connecticut, through his gift of an endowment fund for the delivery and subsequent publication of 'Lectures on Religion in the Light of Science and Philosophy.' The deed of gift declares that 'the object of this Foundation is not the promotion of scientific investigation and discovery, but rather the assimilation and interpretation of that which has been or shall be hereafter discovered, and its application to human welfare, especially by the building of the truths of science and philosophy into the structure of a broadened and purified religion.

Since it deals with facts, not imagination, it cannot be cast into a predetermined mold to fit a unified pattern of arbitrary principles. 'The most we can hope for,' he states, 'is a partial rendering, an approximation, of the real truth about the past.' In this succinct analysis of the philosophy and method of history, Professor Geyl examines the prevailing concepts of history and the new 'awareness of distance' from the past that was lacking in earlier historians. History, he points out, provides an elucidation of the present and its problems by showing them in perspective. This important study of the historical point of view is based on the author's Terry Lecture at Yale.
