In den WarenkorbZustand: very good. Presumed first edition thus. This is a standard size postcard, with five images on the front. It could not have been produced prior to 2003 since it references at least a 60 year history of work at Y-12. A picture of General Groves is in the center surrounded by aerial views of Y-12 facilities which highlight the changes to Y-12 over its first 60 years of history. There is an external view of Bullding 9731, the 'pilot plant', a view of the Beta-track calutron loaced in Building 9204-3. The text on half of the reverse side indicates that uch of the existing physical plant and appearance of Y-12 reflects the legacy of the World War ii and Cold War eras.On February 18, 1943, in the midst of the second World War, ground was broken in rural East Tennessee for the first production building at the Y-12 Electromagnetic Separation Plant. The plant's job was to make enough enriched uranium for a new kind of bomb, an atomic bomb.In a short time Bear Creek Valley, where the plant is located, was filled with machinery and the bustle of people on a mission. At its peak in 1945, more than 22,000 workers were employed at the site. Thirty months later the success of Y-12's mission was announced to the world when after two atomic weapons (the uranium bomb, Little Boy, and the plutonium bomb, Fat Man) were detonated, the Empire of Japan surrendered and World War II ended. Y-12 had separated the uranium used in Little Boy.Since that time Y-12's missions have changed. Y-12 played a key part in the production of thermonuclear weapons, helping win the Cold War with 8,000 people working around the clock to produce nuclear weapon secondaries. In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. Presumed first edition thus. This item is the size of a standard postcard. It is not a postcard, as there is no place for a stamp or an address to be put in. Each side has three images, on of the calutron operations, one of the individual in 1945, and again in either 2004 or 2008.Gladys Owens was one of "The Calutron Girls" from January 1945 to August 1945. She was one of a special group of young high school graduates hired and trained to do only what they were told to do without questioning and without discussion. She only knew she was doing something vital to her nation and was helping win the war. Connie Bolling was one of Oak Ridge's first inhabitants, an engineer and schoolteacher who was recruited to train the unskilled workers. He remembers the city springing up from nothing in 1943. "When I arrived there was nothing but farmland, but pretty soon they were building houses, one every 30 minutes, hauling them in, half-built, on trucks down the street. The place was soon full of thousands of workers."By 1945, Oak Ridge would contain the world's first nuclear reactor, the biggest building in the world, and would use one-sixth of all the electricity generated in the US. Even though everything was classified, the army wanted to document how the billions of dollars committed to the programme by Congress was being spent and it appointed a young soldier, Ed Westcott, as official project photographer. He took thousands of photographs showing every aspect of life in "the city behind the fence". Postcard size ephemera--images on each side.…

This is a standard size postcrd, with photos of Alpha and Beta calutrons on the front with some text, and additonal information on half of the other side, with the last portion blank so the post card could be addressed and stamped.Building 9731, the Calutron Pilot Plant, also called ZAX/XBX, was the first building to become operational in the fall of 1943. It contained two each of the alpha and beta calutrons. It was used as a training facility as well. The calutrons there were also used to prove the operational changes suggested by Ernest O. Lawrence fromthe Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, CA. Often, during the early days of Y-12's history, Lawrence, himself, would travel to Y-12 and personallymake adjustments to the calutrons. General Leslie R. Groves was also a frequent visitor during the startup and early operations. This is the first tangible product producing equipment. They did notreally know what to expect. Personal inspection of the operation was a must to fully understand whatwas going on. Postcard--one retectangular card with printing on both sides.…

The Y-12 National Security Complex is a United States Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration facility located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, near the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It was built as part of the Manhattan Project for the purpose of enriching uranium for the first atomic bombs. In the years after World War II, it has been operated as a manufacturing facility for nuclear weapons components and related defense purposes.Y-12 is the World War II code name for the electromagnetic isotope separation plant producing enriched uranium at the Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as part of the Manhattan Project. Construction began in February 1943 under the management of Stone and Webster. Because of a wartime shortage of copper, the massive electromagnetic coils were made with 14,700 tons of coinage silver from U.S. government vaults at West Point. The Y-12 facility began operating in November 1943, separating uranium-235 from natural uranium, which is 99.3% uranium-238, by using calutrons to perform electromagnetic isotope separation. Y-12 separated the uranium-235 for Little Boy, the nuclear weapon that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. K-25, another facility in Oak Ridge, produced enriched uranium using gaseous diffusion. However, K-25 did not begin operating until March 1945 and fed slightly enriched uranium to Y-12's Beta Calutrons as the push to obtain enough uranium 235 for Little Boy came in the early summer of 1945. The S-50 Thermal Diffusion Plant at the K-25 site also provided feed material for Y-12's Beta Calutrons. Brochure--this is a standard size sheet, printed on both sides, with three panels.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. May be a revised version. This is a brochure. It is a single oversized sheet with four panels per side. There is text on all eight panels and illustrations on seven of the panels with the Y-12 logo on the eighth panel. A calutron is a mass spectrometer originally designed and used for separating the isotopes of uranium. It was developed by Ernest O. Lawrence during the Manhattan Project and was based on his earlier invention, the cyclotron. Its name was derived from California University Cyclotron, in tribute to Lawrence's institution, the University of California, where it was invented. Calutrons were used in the industrial-scale Y-12 uranium enrichment plant at the Clinton Engineer Works in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The uranium-235 produced there was used in the Little Boy atomic bomb that was detonated over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. During World War II, calutrons were developed to obtain substantial quantities of high-purity uranium-235, by taking advantage of the small mass difference between uranium isotopes. Electromagnetic separation for uranium enrichment was abandoned in the post-war period in favor of the more complicated, but more efficient, gaseous diffusion method. Although most of the calutrons of the Manhattan Project were dismantled at the end of the war, some remained in use to produce isotopically enriched samples of naturally occurring elements for military, scientific and medical purposes. The Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12) is in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, about 15 miles from Knoxville, and dates from the World War II Manhattan Project. The total Y-12 Site footprint is 7.6 million sq-ft, with a 10-year plan to reduce the footprint to 3 million sq-ft by 2028. Under NNSA's plans for Complex Transformation, Y-12 would be the 'Uranium Center of Excellence'. Y-12 contains the world's largest repository of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in metal form, storing approximately 400 MT of the material- enough for about 14,000 nuclear warheads. While Y-12 refers to itself as the 'Fort Knox' for storage and management of HEU, there are a number of security risks posed by the site. Presumed First Edition, First issue thus.…

Tennessee Eastman was hired by the Army Corps of Engineers to manage Y-12 during the Manhattan Project. The company transferred scientists from Kingsport, Tennessee to Y-12 and operated the plant from 1943 to May 1947.[5] The Y-12 electromagnetic plant units were initially operated by scientists from Berkeley to remove bugs and achieve a reasonable operating rate. They were then turned over to trained Tennessee Eastman operators who had only a high school education. Nichols compared unit production data, and pointed out to physicist Ernest Lawrence that the young "hillbilly" girl operators were outproducing his PhDs. They agreed to a production race and Lawrence lost, a morale boost for the Tennessee Eastman workers and supervisors. The girls were "trained like soldiers not to reason why", while "the scientists could not refrain from time-consuming investigation of the cause of even minor fluctuations of the dials".…

This Trip Report was marked at the time of issuance as Official Use Only. Given the passage of time and disclosures of relevant information into the public domain, it is understood that this limitation no longer applies. The purpose of this trip was to meet with British counterparts within Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) in Aldermaston, U.K. for a JOWOG 28 Focused Exchange under VISAM 2102. This Focused Exchange shared very current knowledge of the status and direction of experimental science of uranium hydriding initiation, and by site visit evaluated the current technologies applies to uranium corrosion at Aldermaston. The discussions were based about three specific focused exchanges that divided the topic into the roles of the gas phase (28LP-02-05), the oxide film (28LP-02-04), and the metallurgical texture (28MM-02-01) of the uranium metal. The unique capabilities of AWE, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12), were coordinated and leveraged by this visit. The ultimate goal was to arrive at a scientific basis for developing a predictive model for where and when hydriding will initiate. The visit to Vertec was to obtain direct knowledge of their facilities and capabilities that represent the only vendor involved in the modernization and maintenance of high-resolution, gas mass spectrometers critical to the determination of uranium corrosion atmospheres. Vertec had recently completed an upgrade of the VG30-01 high resolution mass spectrometer at Y-12 resulting in it being the most modern of its type in the Nuclear Weapons Complex. This visit was for an onsite evaluation of their overall capability to modernize other high-value, aging, and otherwise irreplaceable equipment. …

When open four panels on one side presents a detailed map of the Y-12 Complex. Two panels on the other side are a key to the building numbers and locations. The front panel has some introductory text and phone numbers for the visitor center, badge office and other organizations. The final, rear panel has maps of the Oak Ridge-Knoxville Route and the City of Oak Ridge. In the years after World War II, it has been operated as a manufacturing facility for nuclear weapons components and related defense purposes. Y-12 is managed and operated under contract by Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS), which is composed of member companies Bechtel National, Inc., Lockheed Martin Services, Inc., ATK Launch Systems, Inc., and SOC LLC, with Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. as a teaming subcontractor. CNS also operates Pantex Plant in Texas. Y-12's primary missions since the end of the Cold War have been to support defense needs through stockpile stewardship, assist on issues of nuclear non-proliferation, support the Naval Reactors program, and provide expertise to other federal agencies. Y-12 is also responsible for the maintenance and production of all uranium parts for every nuclear weapon in the United States arsenal. Y-12 is responsible for the production and maintenance of the "secondary" aspect of thermonuclear devices. Y-12 has a history of providing secure storage of nuclear material for both the United States and other governments. Early efforts focused on securing material from the former Soviet Union; recent activities have included recovery of highly enriched uranium from Chile. Environmental cleanup has been an ongoing issue for the Department of Energy in Oak Ridge. The Y-12 plant was listed as an EPA Superfund site in the 1990s for groundwater and soil contamination. Today, the Y-12 plant is listed on the DOE's Cleanup Criteria/Decision Document Database (or C2D2 database). An influx of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act benefited cleanup efforts by funding demolition and decontamination of aging facilities. These efforts work to further the long term reduction in the size of the Y-12 facility. CNS Y-12 employs approximately 4,700 people. About 1,500 additional personnel work onsite as employees of organizations that include UT-Battelle, Science Applications International Corporation, Bechtel Jacobs, and WSI Oak Ridge (an American-controlled unit of G4S Secure Solutions), which holds the security contract for the site. Y-12's manufacturing facility provides vital elements of the National Nuclear Security Administration's operations in four strategic areas, including Defense Programs (manufacturing, storage, and stockpile), Nuclear Nonproliferation (nuclear material security), Naval Reactors (uranium processing for Navy), and Complementary Work (mobile hospitals, response training, and access control technology).…

The workshop had several keynote speakers whose remarks have been summarized. There were working group reports in the areas of Transport, Thermodynamics and Phase Stability, Chemical Kinetics and Phase Transformation, Mechanical (Stress), Neutronics, Electronic Data Management and Retrieval, Mining, Assessment and Selected of Needed Compatibility Data, Measurement Practice for achieving High Value Data, Data Validity and Veritas, and Leadership and Management of the Industry-Wide Database. This was followed by Path Forward/Recommendations and a List of the Participants. Perhaps the most significant portion of this document is the Report of the Working Group on Leadership and Management of the Industry-Wide Database which was chaired by Robert Hanrahan of the National Nuclear Security Administration. Some of the other Working Group chairpersons were associated with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Idaho National Laboratory, the Y-12 National Security Complex, and the National Institute for Science and Technology. The sponsors of this workshop had a vision of a Nuclear Materials Compatibility Data Archive. High quality science and engineering is based on using and evaluating data. The recent advance of dynamic data evaluation has the potential to alter the paradigm of information usage, including the way data is gathered, verified, stored, and used. These changes will dramatically improve the quality, value, and sharing of information, reduce the amount of errors and duplication in scientific research, and will pinpoint and map out areas that need ore work. By coordinating with editors and the publishing community, the relatively high levels of erroneous data can be drastically reduced, as observed in the thermo and biological data fields. Dynamic data evaluation is like adding Google and Matlab together for a scientific field. The rapid advance of technologies has made it possible to create data systems that hold essentially all of the published data in a given field. By incorporating a strong set of rules, automated input systems, and comparisons with existing datasets, it becomes possible to rapidly analyze, verify, and share data in real-time without lengthy literature searches. The ability to use dynamic data evaluation for rapid data analysis can reduce the time required for literature surveys from months to minutes. In face, the literature search can even be tuned to for much deeper insight into the data and can even highlight area where data is sparse or plentiful. By building on the body of knowledge and experience of previous research teams, including the highly-recognized ThermoData engine system from NIST, it is possible to rapidly build a system for nuclear materials research that will have strong capabilities for safe and effective data-sharing in the global community. The goal of this firs Nuclear Materials Compatibility workshop was to coordinate the domestic nuclear laboratories and industries in planning the development of a system which can be effectively and safely used by all parties. The input of representatives from across the industry and government indicated a high level of interest and anticipation for the proposes system. This document details the workshop's discussions and interactions and highlights the path forward for development of a full-scale system.…
