Zustand: Bueno. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Has the First Amendment become a tool to promote the conservative agenda On June 27, 2018, Justice Elena Kagan, dissenting from the Supreme Court's decision in a free speech case, accused the Roberts Court majority of 'weaponizing the First Amendment'--of 'turning the First Amendment into a sword' and using it to serve a conservative political agenda. The U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., has decided more free speech cases than any previous court in history. The decisions have mostly favored free speech claims. But the court increasingly has found First Amendment protection not for dissidents and minorities but for businesses and conservative religious interests. The court has taken free speech principles developed decades ago to shield and empower oppressed minorities and applied them to shield and empower corporations and the religious right. The book critically examines how the Roberts Court has decided the key cases, changed the rules on free speech, engineered outcomes, and become the willing vehicle for advancing the conservative agenda. Justice Kagan was right.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The first family named Dow in America landed in 1637, escaping from the persecution of the English kings and the Anglican Church as a part of the 'great migration' begun by the Pilgrims 17 years earlier. Two hundred and seventy years later, descendent George W. Dow captained the only seven-masted sailing vessel ever builtthe Thomas W. Lawsonon its maiden cross-Atlantic voyage. Encountering unfathomable weather, and monstrous winds, tides, and waves as it approached the English coast, the Lawson slipped her anchors and sunk among treacherous rocks in the Scilly Isles. The schooner, its cargo, and 16 sailors were lost, but 'lucky' Captain Dow and his engineer were heroically saved from the rocks the next day. This story is an account of how Captain Dow was the culmination of the Dow family's evolution from immigrants in a primitive, 17th century foreign land, to seafaring as an occupation, as a new United States and global economy began to emerge. And, his life also was the last of the Dow's New England-based, sea faring existence, as the Captain's descendantsalready five generations and countingspread from Boston to homes, careers and lives far-flung from Maine and New England.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Hardcover. Full leather. An early (certainly 17th century if not original to 1633) binding. Raised cords. Corners bumped and leather less than supple, but binding good and tight and complete without any deficiency except age. Engraved title page. Pencil notation on the inside cover says "lacks maps" as indeed it does. 20 pages of frontismatter. Then pagination begins with '1' and continues to 807, followed by a 1 page poem "Of the Unknowne parts of the world." The section on American begins on page 767. "At the first arrivall of the Spaniands into this country, they found the people without all manner of apparell, nought skilled in Agriculture, making their bread of a kind of root, callled Maiz: a root wherein is a venemous liquor, not inferiour to most deadly poysons: but this juice they crush out, and after having dried and prepared the root, make their bread of it. They worshipped divellish spirits, whom they called Semes, in remembrance of whom they kept continually certaine images as it were, made of a cotton wooll, like to our children's babies." It is hardly a handbook by which one could hope to navigate or settle the land -- but it is an extremely early account of America, published while John Winthrop and the Plymouth Pilgrims were still unpacking their bags in New England. (and just a decade after Shakespeare's First Folio). The majority of the book covers the more familiar confines of Europe and the Mediterranean. "Of France. the country is wondrous populous, supposed to containe 15 millions of living soules." Nicely printed and with wide margins at the sides, somewhat close at top and bottom. Measures about 5.5 x 7.25 inches. An important glimpse into the worldview of the early 17th century. A long discourse on whether the natives were black or white ends with the conclusion that they are descendants of the Tartars. And a description of the gold mines says that in there there was 'more gold than earth.' First published in 1621 & popular enough, evidently, to go through 6 editions in a dozen years. [I do not see any mention of maps in either the 1629 or 1631 editions of this book, which are the only ones currently available, so pencil notes notwithstanding, I'm not sure if there are supposed to be maps here or not. There are no maps in the google-books scan of this 1633 edition.] Please email with questions or to request photos.
