Paul Barkshire was a London based photographer who aimed to capture definitive images of the streets and buildings of late twentieth century London. He was the author of a number of published monographs illustrative of his photographic output, including Paul Barkshire's Unexplored London, 1987, and London Villages, 1992. This book is much more than a collection of brilliant photographs. It is the culmination of a crusade to record London in a way that has never been achieved before. London is an irrepressible mixture of the ordered and the chaotic, the historic and the transient. More tan any other capital city, it is the coincidence of the planned and the spontaneous. But is is also a vanishing city, one that loses more of tis essential character every year. It is this capacity for self-destruction allied to its immense beauty that has prompted Paul Barkshire to dedicate eight years of his life to capturing on film what is arguably the most elusive city in the world. Barkshire has now triumphantly given London the visual record it deserves. Barkshire would devotedly set out to reach his destinations at six o'clock in the morning to record the architecture of the capital without the interference of traffic. With unprecedented attention to detail--some of his exposures are over three hours long--he has photographed London with a clarity unachieved since the plate camera photographers of the late nineteenth century.
