So, too, we write what we want to read: in this case, the book that I wish someone had written for me when I was a young teacher just starting out. I began teaching in a British-style boys' boarding school: all boys, all boarding-a trial by fire if ever there was one. I was fresh out of university, with a good MA but virtually no teaching experience and only the dimmest idea of why I was joining the profession. I had been told by someone I trusted that I had a natural talent for teaching, felt faint stirrings of vocation, and wanted to give something back after a long and self-indulgent education. Beyond that, I had no idea of what I was getting into or why. It was a strange Darwinian world of bad food, cold showers, harsh discipline, and cross-country runs, with other vestiges of British public school tradition, including bread pudding, corporal punishment, and daily chapel. Paradoxically, despite the strict discipline and institutional formality-the masters were universally referred to as Sir, and the boys addressed by surname-a great fondness grew between staff and students. We were, at the very least, honorable enemies reminiscent of Tom Brown's School Days-at best, a boisterous family marooned together, more like Swiss Family Robinson. Something hilarious happened every day. The boys were irrepressible, despite our best efforts, and the charged, insular atmosphere of the school somehow produced the most extravagantly colorful personalities. I was always amazed at how the boys bounced back after a frozen route march or an exhausting exam week; it was the masters who showed the strain. Partly, we lacked the resiliency of youth. We were older in our bones, and our sinews had lost their elasticity. Partly, we followed an unrelenting schedule since, in addition to our teaching duties (including a half day on Saturday), we were required to patrol the dorms, supervise study hall, and lead all-weather outdoor adventures. Sixty-hour workweeks were standard, rising to eighty hours during peak periods. But we also suffered the natural consequences of an immutable law and a professional handicap, which I will explain. …

Elegí sólo nueve de ellos, los cuales considero representativos de épocas y sus contextos. Una verdad que aceptan los escritores de guiones cinematográficos, es que estos no se escriben, se reescriben. Y una forma de darles un punto final es venderlos, y mejor si se transforman en película. Algo parecido me sucede con estos relatos, algunos ya publicados en revistas y -por supuesto- reescritos, otros que están igual como fueron plasmados, pero que la única forma de darles un punto final es transformarlos en libro. Toda recreación de la realidad. El primero fue LA CALÉNDULA y recuerda un hecho impactante de mi niñez. Ya en plena época 'revolucionaria' a nivel mundial estudiantil, con epicentro en 1968, sale EL SIGNO DE LOS TIEMPOS en aquel Uruguay, pero que bien podía haber sucedido -mejor dicho, sucedía- en cualquier otro país. Y en él se plantean algunas inusuales ideas, pero factibles de prevenir ciertas aceptadas prácticas injustas. LAS MANOS responde a recuerdos de la confrontación en Uruguay, pero los hechos pueden ser extrapolados al resto de los países latinoamericanos con solo cambiar algunos nombres y referencias. Los sucesos descritos, en aquel momento necesitaban de imaginación para ser relatados, al punto que alguna vez un lector aun descreído de los terribles detalles, me preguntó si yo había estado allí. LA DECISIÓN es un suceso de algún barrio montevideano en plena tiranía antecesora de la Dictadura. Con estos cuatro relatos me desplazo hasta los años de la primera juventud. Después viene la etapa venezola, y con ella el traslado de todas las expectativas que supone para un médico el manejar posibilidades y obstáculos, para ejercer la profesión en su nueva situación. Y no podía comenzar más que con la primera impresión del cambio total de cultura y paisajes, así como con los sentimientos despertados por uno de los primeros pacientes asignados. Que por otra parte ayudó a entender desde el mismo inicio que las realidades y sus causas eran las mismas, y sólo la vestidura de apariencias era lo diferente. Por lo cual si bien lejos de la Patria natal y los afectos aquellos, la inmediata identificación con las nuevas realidades y la obtención de nuevos similares y valiosos afectos, llevaran a entender con naturalidad, en la práctica, el concepto de 'Patria grande'. Así surgió EL MURO, y el recuerdo de su protagonista hoy sigue vivo y así quedará en este libro, independiente de su número de lectores que depende de otras cosas. He querido agregar otros relatos nacidos en Venezuela, inspirados como ya dije en hechos y personajes reales -nombres cambiados, como puede imaginarse- EL BRUJO, GRAN FINAL, y el relato que cierra el libro, ZAMURO, aunque de tema que parece insólito, al menos en aquellos tiempos, totalmente real. Se intercala un relato que escribí en 1982, expresión de duelo y el consiguiente incrédulo dolor, al entérame de la muerte accidental de quien fuera mi mejor amigo -hermano- de niñez y primera juventud. Experiencias que acumuló y logró imprimir con el nombre de 'Tras las Montañas. . .' que abre con un canto a los indígenas que tanto le enseñaron. . .Se sienta, descansa y se le va el alma.El tiempo transcurre, los años pasan.La vida y la muerte se le adelantan.La vida corre y la muerte viene rápidaAsí es el Hombre Nostalgia. . .Estudió Psicología Clínica en la Facultad de Piscología en la U N A M y su vocación por el trabajo con adolescentes, lo llevó a dedicar, durante treinta años, su vida profesional a la atención del fenómeno de la farmacodependencia en la ciudad de Acapulco y en el Estado de Guerrero en general, atendiendo y/o capacitando a grupos de Adolescentes, Padres de Familia, Maestros, Médicos, siendo innovador en el trabajo preventivo y la participación Comunitaria. El trabajo lo llevó a estudiar psicoterapia y a especializarse en Psicoterapia del adolescente y de familia, así como a participar en muchos congresos y cursos especializados sobre el tema.Su interés por los adolescentes lo motivó a buscar la oportunidad de servirles también en las aulas de clase, tarea que ha desarrollado durante más de cuarenta años dando clases en el Nivel Medio Superior, actividad que le ha permitido participar en varios Cursos y Diplomados, sobre todo el último de ellos sobre Competencias Docentes que ha servido para certificarse como Docente del NMS y estar a tono con los requerimientos actuales de la RIEMS.Ha participado en varias investigaciones, entre otras, 'La Dimensión del Fenómeno de la Drogadicción en la Población Escolar del Nivel Medio Superior del Estado de Guerrero', 1993; Encuestas de Opinión sobre Farmacodependencia en Los Municipios de Guerrero en los años 1985, 87, 89', 'Estudio sobre la comprensión de la lectura en el Nivel Medio Superior'; ha escrito artículos para varias revistas y ha publicado algunos Libros como 'Memoria Institucional, experiencias sobre el trabajo preventivo y curativo de farmacodependientes'(con la muy valiosa colaboración de su Equipo de trabajo), 'Un Acercamiento a Trabajo Social', 'Monografía sobre Trabajo Social en Acapulco', 'Tras Las Montañas y . . treinta años después. '; ha escrito ensayos sobre farmacodependencia y sobre educación, en este tema el último: 'La lectura como herramienta para el aprendizaje'; lo mismo que cuentos para niños y ha dirigido y editado la revista comunitaria 'Tecocomulco.'Las Letras de la Nostalgia es su primera incursión en temas literarios, desde luego, esto no va en detrimento del valor de sus Letras y mucho menos de la profundidad de las ideas que nos transmiten.…
