Walter Ritchie (1919-1997) was one of the last living pupils of Eric Gill at Pigotts near High Wycombe before the Second World War.Ma…ny of his public works were in stone, wood, metal and brick relief, as many of his commissions were for public buildings it depended on how much money was available to what materials were used and a lot of schools and public building chose brick as they could get more for the money, but some have suffered loss from building redevelopment.

Grey cloth with title in black on spine and Gill's initials in red on front cover. Removable clear plastic dustjacket (as issued?). Condition: Very good, with just a hint of shelfwear to covers. No inscripti…ons. Clear plastic jacket is also in very good condition. A prospectus for the book is also loosely inserted. 48pp. including 11 b/w illustrations. Between 1906 and 1940 Eric Gill employed perhaps 24 assistants, apprentices and pupils in his sculpture workshops. This memoir is written by the sculptor who had one of the longest working associations with Gill. Between 1931 and 1940, from tiny sketches, Donald Potter (1902-2004) made all Eric Gill's sculpture in wood and collaborated with much of his work in stone. Potter later became a part-time teacher of sculpture and pottery at Bryanston school in Dorset.
