Zustand: Muy bueno. 'Reads like an engrossing novel' Sunday Times Mary Queen of Scots passed her childhood in France and married the Dauphin to become Queen of France at the age of sixteen. Widowed less than two years later, she returned to Scotland as Queen after an absence of thirteen years. Her life then entered its best known phase: the early struggles with John Knox, and the unruly Scottish nobility; the fatal marriage to Darnley and his mysterious death; her marriage to Bothwell, the chief suspect, that led directly to her long English captivity at the hands of Queen Elizabeth; the poignant and extraordinary story of her long imprisonment that ended with the labyrinthine Babington plot to free her, and her execution at the age of forty-four.EAN: 9781780229263 Tipo: Libros Categoría: Título: Mary Queen of ScotsAutor: Fraser, Lady Antonia Editorial: W&N Idioma: EN Páginas: 800 Peso: 630.

Two volumes bound and printed as one, 12mo in sixes, pp. 151; 147; first two leaves of volume II torn and repaired, without loss; a few minor stains; in modern half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. An early edition, but with a false imprint the list of booksellers is fictional. Although the volumes have separate pagination and signatures, they were almost certainly printed as one continuous process: volume I ends on N4, and volume II begins with A1-2, then moves to signature B, so I suspect that A1-2 are in fact N5-6.

Printer's Device of Crossed Keys to title page. (Note: The author is not the famous explorer by the same name). Solildly bound copy in original binding, with fascinating copper plates depicting intricate architectural and artistic details. Cathedrals were once designed consciously, with deep knowledge of how shape of wall, play of light and shadow, affected the inner lives of worshipers and aspirants, remarkably inspiring within the "wish to Be", to rise up, to commune with God. The copperplates within this eighteenth-century study, magnificently reveal this purposed, now perhaps lost forever, understanding of sacred geometry, as manifested in architecture. Includes a "List of persons buried in this Cathedral", including Marmaduke Constaable, Hugh de Lubbersthorpe,Dame Elizabeth Beckwith, , Ethelrida, Daughter of Edwin the Great, Eadbert, King of Northumberland, John Negropontens, Gilbert Pynchbeck, Lady Mary Younge, Richrd Whittington (but not his cat), and Sweryne, a Danish King. ".With the Office of Treasurer naturally fell that of Sub-Treasrer, whose duty it was to provide Sacrists and other Officers to do the servile Offcesof the Church, as cleaning it, opening the Doors, ringing the Bells, blowing the Organ, &c. for which the Treasurer usually paid him a Salary of 50 Marks - Bot these Offices became extinct in this Church very early, and the Reason given for dissolving them was undoubtedly a sufficient one. (abrepto omni Thesauro, desiit Thesaurorii munus: Being plundered of all its Treasure, it had no further Need of a Treasurer." (p. 134).
