Illustrierte Originalbroschur. Zustand: Wie neu. Erste Auflage dieser Ausgabe. 160 Seiten. Paperback 19,3 cm. Very Good. Sehr guter Zustand. Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. After an expensive dinner party on their 13th wedding anniversary, James calmly announces his desire to leave Bridie. Unless Bridie reclaims a portion of her past, she fears she will have no future. - Nina Bawden CBE (born 19 January 1925[1], Ilford) is a popular British novelist and children's writer. Her mother was a teacher and her father a marine. Life: She grew up in Ilford "a rather nasty housing estate that [her] mother despised".[2] After World War II broke out, she was evacuated at the age of fourteen to Aberdare, Wales. She spent school holidays at a farm in Shropshire along with her mother and her brothers. Bawden attended Somerville College, Oxford, where she gained a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Her novels include Carrie's War, Peppermint Pig, and The Witch's Daughter. A number of her works have been dramatised by BBC Children's television, and many have been translated into various languages. In 2002 she was badly injured in the Potters Bar rail crash, and her husband Austen Kark was killed. She currently lives in London and Nauplion, Greece. References: ^ "Birthdays: Jan 10". Buch
Zustand: Wie neu. Erste Auflage dieser Ausgabe. 320 (46 Seiten. 19,7 cm. Sehr guter Zustand. Aus der Bibliothek der Gräfin Ledebur. Dublin, 1922. Some Catholics look to Riordan, their legendary leader, for deliverance. At the end of the week he will emerge from exile. The instigator is Sean whose avowel of self-sufficiency is undercut by his reliance upon the Englishman Arion. Sean cannot reach him and they fear betrayal. - Olivia Mary Manning CBE (2 March 1908 23 July 1980) was a British novelist, poet, writer and reviewer. Her fiction and non-fiction, frequently detailing journeys and personal odysseys, were principally set in England, Ireland, Europe and the Middle East. She often wrote from her personal experience, though her books also demonstrate strengths in imaginative writing. Her books are widely admired for her artistic eye and vivid descriptions of place. Manning's youth was divided between Portsmouth and Ireland, giving her what she described as "the usual Anglo-Irish sense of belonging nowhere". She attended art school, and moved to London, where her first serious novel, The Wind Changes, was published in 1937. In August 1939 she married R.D. Smith ("Reggie"), a British Council lecturer posted in Bucharest, Romania, and subsequently in Greece, Egypt and Palestine as the Nazis over-ran Eastern Europe. Her experiences formed the basis for her best known work, the six novels making up The Balkan Trilogy and The Levant Trilogy, known collectively as Fortunes of War. The overall quality of her output was considered uneven by critics, but this series, published between 1960 and 1980, was described by Anthony Burgess as "the finest fictional record of the war produced by a British writer". Manning returned to London after the war and lived there until her death, writing poetry, short stories, novels, non-fiction, reviews, and drama for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Both Manning and her husband had affairs, but they never contemplated divorce. Her relationships with writers such as Stevie Smith and Iris Murdoch were difficult, as an insecure Manning was jealous of their greater success. Her constant grumbling about all manner of subjects is reflected in her nickname, "Olivia Moaning", but Reggie never wavered in his role as his wife's principal supporter and encourager, confident that her talent would ultimately be recognised. As she had feared, real fame only came after her death in 1980, when an adaptation of Fortunes of War was televised in 1987. Manning's books have received limited critical attention; as during her life, opinions are divided, particularly about her characterisation and portrayal of other cultures. Her works tend to minimize issues of gender, and are not easily classified as feminist literature. Nevertheless, recent scholarship has highlighted Manning's importance as a woman writer of war fiction and of the British Empire in decline. Her works are critical of war, racism, colonialism and imperialism, and examine themes of displacement and physical and emotional alienation. wikipedia--wiki-Olivia_Manning Aus: wikipedia- Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 270 Taschenbuch.
