Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Timothy, MaryBeth (illustrator). Neuware - 'Cherokee Earth Dwellers will be the first book to articulate a Cherokee view of the natural world grounded in Cherokee names for that world. Weaving together a chorus of voices of elders including Hastings Shade, who created booklets with over 600 Cherokee names for animals and plants, the manuscript explores how contemporary Cherokee knowledge keepers understand and engage the natural world. The core of the book is the names themselves, including birds, animals, edible plants, reptiles, amphibians, trees, insects, plants, and fish. Far more than a word list, however, the manuscript includes explanations, anecdotes, and stories attached to each entry that chart the contours of a Cherokee understanding of the natural world. Some of these names are known and in use today by Cherokee speakers, but the vast majority are no longer in everyday use within Cherokee community. What emerges in Cherokee Earth Dwellers is a breathtaking vision of an enstoried Cherokee world, one in which all creatures interrelate in complicated ways that articulate a range of values, and the evolving nature of contemporary Cherokee community'.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Chronicles the creation of an institution dedicated to greater diversity, inclusivity, and equity on campusRevolution to Evolutionmaps thejourney of the University of Washington's Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D), from its inception as a list of demands on paper put forward by a dedicated group of students to its status as an internationally recognized model for university programs. Born from a national movement in the late 1960s seeking to address structural and cultural racism, OMA&D started as acore group of Black Student Union leaders at the UW who demanded changes in how the school served students of color. Emile Pitre shares deep insight into the making of the institution through candid interviews, letters, and reflections ofthose who participated across decades. His unique perspective and sources provide historical depth to the telling of OMA&D's sixty-year journey, often vividly sharpened by Pitre's own boots-on-the-ground viewpoint.By the time of his retirement in 2014, he was recognized as an 'elder statesman' of OMA&D for his knowledge of the institution's history and his dedication to students throughout his career.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The exquisite ceramic ware produced at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory at Jingdezhen in southern China functioned as a kind of visual propaganda for the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) court. Through a detailed study of porcelain manufacture loosely structured around the career of the Manchu bannerman Tang Ying, who supervised ceramic production for the emperor, this volume considers the role of specialist officials in producing the technological knowledge and distinctive artistic forms that were essential to cultural policies of the Chinese state. Through fiscal management, technical experimentation, and design, these imperial technocrats facilitated rationalized manufacturing in precapitalist and preindustrial society. The volume draws on first-hand archaeological evidence from Jingdezhen, the foremost site of porcelain manufacture, as well as the voluminous Archive of the Imperial Handicraft Workshops to investigate a regional factory, the imperial design system, technological treatises, experiments deployed in porcelain manufacture, and court regulations. Grounded in methods for studying science and technology in society, as well as literary and art history, it contributes to scholarship on global empires and on the history of science and technology in China. In describing how the imperial state's intervention in industry has left a lingering imprint on modern China through its labor-intensive modes of production, the division of domestic and foreign markets, and a technocratic culture of centralization, it provides a new perspective for understanding the technology behind goods 'made in China.''.
