Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine dj. First Edition. [nice clean book, essentially as new, top front corner lightly bumped; the jacket shows just a trace of surface wear]. (B&W photographs) The only major biography of one of Hollywood's most luminous actresses of the 1940s. "We follow Linda's path from her Texas childhood and first public success, through her contract with work Twentieth Century-Fox in the heyday of the big studio system. [The author] documents Darnell's discovery and marriages, the adoption of her daughter, the making of many well-known films, and her emotional difficulties, leading up to her tragic death by fire. This is the story of a naive teenager from a dysfunctional middle-class family thrust into the golden age of Hollywood. [The book] examines America's public worship of movie stars and superficial success -- its motives and consequences -- and the addiction to escapism that this worship represents.".

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine dj. First Edition. [lovely, as-new book, with no discernible wear to either book or jacket]. (B&W photographs, maps) The story of Harry Goulding, "who ran a trading post in Monument Valley from 1925 until 1963," a time that coincided "with the period when the conservative, traditional people of the remote northwestern corner of the [Navajo] reservation first came to grips with the twentieth century." A substantial part of the text is derived from interviews with Goulding himself. Chapters 20-22 (about twenty pages total) discuss the use of the Valley as a movie location, beginning with John Ford's shooting there of STAGECOACH in 1938.

The front cover shows the recto of the text of 'Menna's Lament'. this is a volume in the University of Oklahoma Classical Culture seies. Translated by John Foster. Book and jacket are fine. Many important literary texts of ancient Egypt are recreated in translations (by Foster) that are literary rather than literal, conveying the spirit as well as the substance of each text. Included are compositions not readily available elsewhere, such as selections from The Leiden hymns , the conclusion to "The Testament of Amenemhat," and "Menna's Lament." It is a long journey from the decaying fragments of stone and papyrus upon which ancient Egyptian literature is written to finished translations of that civilization's classics. In this book, translator John L. Foster shows how these bits and pieces, hints of old poems written three and four thousand years ago, come alive again to illuminate their time, revealing a spirit that is relevant today. The written compositions of ancient Egypt are among humanity's first - predating the ancient Greek and Hebrew texts by as much as two millenia. Almost all Egyptian literary texts are in verse, frequently in couplet form and include an assortment of poetic elements, such as figurative language, imagery, nuances in vocabulary and sound repitition.
