Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The publication of The Dramatic Writer's Companion in 2009 cemented Will Dunne's reputation as a master teacher of playwrights, screenwriters, and anyone working on dramatic scripts. Divided into three major sections on character, scene, and story, the book consists of more than 60 exercises to help writers zero in on and solve specific problems in their scripts. The success of that book has led Dunne to write a sequel, with new workshop-tested exercises that address additional issues in script development. This new edition of The Dramatic Writer's Companion is fully linked to the sequel and allows readers to find related exercises of interest in the new volume, though it can also still be used as a stand-alone resource.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In the thirty-five years since China instituted its One-Child Policy, 120,000 children-mostly girls-have left China through international adoption, including 85,000 to the United States. It's generally assumed that this diaspora is the result of China's approach to population control, but there is also the underlying belief that the majority of adoptees are daughters because the One-Child Policy often collides with the traditional preference for a son. While there is some truth to this, it does not tell the full story-a story with deep personal resonance to Kay Ann Johnson, a China scholar and mother to an adopted Chinese daughter.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Book editing is by design an invisible art, aimed at creating books that are enlightening, seamless, and pleasurable for readers, while directing all credit to their authors. It is also a multifaceted craft, involving the selection of books to publish, the development and refinement of their contents, and the business of bringing them to readers--tasks sometimes vested in a single editor, sometimes shared among several. And the details of editing vary greatly depending on a book's publisher, genre, format, and intended audience. In this collection, Peter Ginna and a cast of 26 leading figures from all sectors of the book publishing industry demystify what editors do and why it remains important, even in an age of self-publishing and technological disruption. The individual essays cover a wide range of editorial functions and categories as well as topics such as career development, the value of diversity in publishing, and the ongoing evolution of the industry and the editorial profession. The book concludes with an extensive glossary and a list of resources for anyone interested in learning more about what editors do.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - We think of bees as being among the busiest workers in the garden, admiring them for their productivity. But amid their buzzing, they are also great communicators--and unusual dancers. As Karl von Frisch (1886-1982) discovered during World War II, bees communicate the location of food sources to each other through complex circle and waggle dances. For centuries, beekeepers had observed these curious movements in hives, and others had speculated about the possibility of a bee language used to manage the work of the hive. But it took von Frisch to determine that the bees' dances communicated precise information about the distance and direction of food sources. As Tania Munz shows in this exploration of von Frisch's life and research, this important discovery came amid the tense circumstances of the Third Reich.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Most of us think of plants as belonging to one big family, but they don't. There are actually hundreds of different plant families, which botanists have grouped together using what they know of their family histories and genealogy, to bring some sense and order to more than quarter of million different plant species. Using this knowledge, we can teach ourselves to see similarities of characteristics between plants and get a pretty good idea of which family they belong to. GENEALOGY FOR GARDERNERS presents the enormous diversity shown by the many families of plants in a way that is easy to understand, whether one's interest lies in natural history or with horticulture. The superb illustrations make it exceptionally attractive and accessible book. Information boxes on most pages highlight interesting facts, unexpected relationships, botanical curiosities, and notable members of plant family groups. Readers can make sense of the enormous biological diversity of the plant kingdom, by piecing together family likenesses and genealogical connections.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 2012, to celebrate the centennial of Poetry, the Press published The Open Door:100 Poems,100 Years of Poetry Magazine, edited by Share and Wiman; that is the model for this new anthology of fifty essays about reading poetry. All were commissioned by Poetry for a column called The View From Here, in which people 'from outside the world of poetry' are invited to describe when and why they read poetry. The editors sought contributions from philosophers and journalists, musicians and artists, doctors and soldiers, an iron-worker, a lawyer, anthropologist, economist, and politician. Contributors include Neko Case, Roger Ebert, Richard Rorty, Rhymefest, Lynda Barry, Daniel Handler, and Alex Ross. They have arranged the essays in groups and pulled out quotes to open each of the eight sections as a way to suggest themes without trying to prescribe how the pieces should be read. Each essay retains its own voice, and many are surprising, provocative, touching, or funny.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Nature has placed Man under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure' (Jeremy Bentham, 1789). How should we act, tossed about as we are by these two Should we, as the utilitarian would have it, maximize pleasure for the greatest number This elegant intellectual and cultural history traces the birth of utilitarian thinking in the seventeenth century to today's evolutionary theory, economics, and neuroscience, fields that have recently been drawn together, once again, under the banner of utility. The author is attentive not only to its subtle reach but also to the single moment when, with the dawn of informed consent in medical research, an anti-utilitarian attention to autonomy briefly surfaced. This is an important book about the rise, fall, resurrection--and dangers--of utilitarian reasoning in medicine.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The last 200 years have witnessed a 100-fold leap in well-being. Deirdre McCloskey argues that most people today are stunningly better off than their forbearers were in 1800, and that the rest of humanity will soon be. A purely materialist, incentivist view of economic change does not explain this leap. We have now the third in McCloskey's three-volume opus about how bourgeois values transformed Europe. Volume 3 nails the case for that transfiguration, telling us how aristocratic virtues of hierarchy were replaced by bourgeois virtues (more precisely, by attitudes toward virtues) that made it possible for ordinary folk with novel ideas to change the way people, farmed, manufactured, traveled, ruled themselves, and fought. It is a dramatic story, and joins a dramatic debate opened up by Thomas Piketty in his best-selling Capital in the 21st Century. McCloskey insists that economists are far too preoccupied by capital and saving, arguing against the position (of Piketty and most others) that capital induces a tendency to get more, that money reproduces itself, that riches are created from riches. Not so, our intrepid McCloskey shows. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, among the biggest wealth accumulators in our era, didn't get rich through the magic of compound interest on capital. They got rich through intellectual property, creating billions of dollars from virtually nothing. Capital was no more important an ingredient to the original Apple or Microsoft than cookies or cucumbers. The debate is between those who think riches are created from riches versus those who, with McCloskey, think riches are created from rags, between those who see profits as a generous return on capital, or profits coming from innovation that ultimately benefits us all.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Just one generation ago, the Sora tribe in India lived in a world populated by the spirits of their dead, who spoke to them through shamans in trance. Every day, they negotiated their wellbeing in heated arguments or in quiet reflections on their feelings of love, anger, and guilt. Today, young Sora are rejecting the worldview of their ancestors and switching their allegiance to warring sects of fundamentalist Christianity or Hinduism. Communion with ancestors is banned as sacred sites are demolished, female shamans are replaced by male priests, and debate with the dead gives way to prayer to gods. For some, this shift means liberation fromjungle spirits through literacy, employment, and democratic politics; others despair for fear of being forgotten after death. How can a society abandon one understanding of reality so suddenly and see the world in a totally different way Over forty years, anthropologist Piers Vitebsky has shared the lives of shamans, pastors, ancestors, gods, policemen, missionaries, and alphabet worshippers, seeking explanations from social theory, psychoanalysis, and theology. Living without the Dead lays bare today's crisis of indigenous religions and shows how historical reform can bring new fulfillments-but also new torments and uncertainties. Vitebsky exploresthe loss of the Sora tradition as one for greater humanity: just as we have been losing our wildernesses, so we have been losing a diverse range of cultural and spiritual possibilities, tribe by tribe. From the award-winning author of The Reindeer People, this isa heartbreaking story of cultural change and the extinction of an irreplaceable world, even while new religious forms come into being to take its place.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The age of globalization is generally understood as involving the massive movement of people and goods on a scale never before seen in human history. In Mobile Fixations, anthropologist Caroline Melly examines mobility as a cultural value in urban Senegal, paying close attention to the points at which the ideal of mobility meets obstructive realities. Specifically, she conceptualizes embouteillage - the traffic bottleneck - as a symbol for the fraught attempts of Dakar's citizens to construct their own mobile futures. Through case studies of investment agencies, cab companies, investors, state workers, and return migrants, Melly pays keen attention to the chronic uncertainty brought on by structural adjustment and how transnational networks might stand as models of inclusion and exclusion in contemporary Senegalese society. Melly also guides us beyond West Africa's shores, to the rickety, Europe-bound fishing boats upon which so many immigrants embark to see a different kind of 'mobile future' abroad, one that too often ends in tragedy. In so doing, the author shows how the consequences of local transformations reach well beyond a country's or even a continent's borders. Mobile Fixations is an engaging and accessible work of cultural anthropology, one that will be an invaluable read for anyone interested in contemporary African society and the global implications of urban development.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In his edited collection Writing the World of Policing: The Difference Ethnography Makes, renowned anthropologist-sociologist Didier Fassin brings together some of the greatest minds in the social sciences to reflect on the question of urban policing in disadvantaged neighborhoods worldwide. The aim of the volume is both to show how ethnography can illuminate the role of policing in society as well as to show how an attention to law enforcement can alter and provoke the practice of ethnography itself. Spanning five continents and tackling such concepts as accountability, complicity, morality, detention, alibi, and others, this volume is bound to become one of the major statements on a topic of increasing interest. Structured around three sections--position, observation, and description--the book mirrors the process of the ethnographic method itself, taking us deep within each local context it investigates while never losing sight of the global relevance of crime, law, and the exercise of power inherent to both.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The work of German sculptor Isa Genzken is brilliantly receptive to the ever-shifting conditions of modern life. In this first book devoted to the artist, Lisa Lee reflects on Genzken's tendency to think across media, attending to sculptures, photographs, drawings, and films from the entire span of her four-decade career, from student projects in the mid-1970s to recent works seen in Genzken's studio.Through penetrating analyses of individual works as well as archival and interview material from the artist herself, Lee establishes four major themes in Genzken's oeuvre: embodied perception, architecture and built space, the commodity, and the body. Contextualizing the sculptor's engagement with fellow artists, such as Joseph Beuys and Bruce Nauman, Lee situates Genzken within a critical and historical framework that begins in politically fraught 1960s West Germany and extends to the globalized present. Here we see how Genzken tests the relevance of the utopian aspirations and formal innovations of the early twentieth century by submitting them to homage and travesty. Sure to set the standard for future studies of Genzken's work, Isa Genzken is essential for anyone interested in contemporary art.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This is the first study of the importance of class in Andy Warhol's artwork. During the early 1960s, as the idea advanced that fixed classes were a mirage and status an individual achievement, Warhol's Pop art appropriated images, techniques, and technologies that have long been described as generically 'American' or 'middle-class.' Grudin, however, demonstrate that these images and techniques--soup cans, comic book ads, and silk screening, for example--were in fact closely associated with the American working class. Having propelled himself from an impoverished childhood in Pittsburgh to the top of the advertising industry in New York City, Warhol understood and exploited the intense appeal that popular culture held for aspiring audiences. Grudin traces Warhol's sensitivity to this tension by examining his diverse output: how he used mass-cultural signs (Coca-Cola, paint-by-numbers, popular dance steps) to produce paintings and photographs as well as films, writing, performance, and music.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Centuries after his death, al-Ghazali remains one of the most influential figures of the Islamic intellectual tradition. Although he is best known for his Incoherence of the Philosophers, Moderation in Belief is his most profound work of philosophical theology. In it, he offers what scholars consider to be the best defense of the Ash'arite school of Islamic theology that gained acceptance within orthodox Sunni theology in the twelfth century, though he also diverges from Ash'arism with his more rationalist approach to the Quran. Together with The Incoherence of the Philosophers, Moderation in Belief informs many subsequent theological debates, and its influence extends beyond the Islamic tradition, informing broader questions within Western philosophical and theological thought. The first complete English-language edition of Moderation in Belief, this new annotated translation by Aladdin M. Yaqub draws on the most esteemed critical editions of the Arabic texts and offers detailed commentary that analyzes and reconstructs the arguments found in the work's four treatises. Explanations of the historical and intellectual background of the texts also enable readers with a limited knowledge of classical Arabic to fully explore al-Ghazali and this foundational text for the first time. With the recent resurgence of interest in Islamic philosophy and the conflict between philosophy and religion, this new translation will be a welcome addition to the scholarship.
