Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Our taste for blood sport stops short at the bruising clash of football players or the gloved blows of boxers, and the suicide of a politician is no more than a personal tragedy. What, then, are we to make of the ancient Romans, for whom the meaning of sport and politics often depended on death? In this provocative, thoughtful book, Paul Plass shows how the deadly violence of arena sport and political suicide served a social purpose in ancient Rome. His work offers a reminder of the complex uses to which institutionalized violence can be put. -- Violence, Plass observes, is a universal part of human life, and so must be integrated into social order. Grounding his study in evidence from Roman history and drawing on ideas from contemporary sociology and anthropology, he first discusses gladiatorial combat in ancient Rome. Massive bloodshed in the arena, Plass argues, embodied the element of danger for a society frequently engaged in war, with outsiders-whether slaves, criminals, or prisoners of war-sacrificed for a sense of public security. A more individual form of socialized violence was political suicide, an endgame to the deadly competition for power played out by the emperor and his opponents. Using game theory as a model, Plass spells out the rules implicit in Roman political suicide, either instigated by the emperor or carried out in protest by opponents. -- However efficiently violence was accommodated at Rome through arena sport and political suicide, observers like Seneca and Tacitus also detected deep contradiction in extravagant, socially sanctioned mayhem with antisocial consequences and in public careers paradoxically crowned by voluntary enforced suicide. Buch
Broschiert / Paperback. Zustand: Gut. XVIII, 268 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Ovid's Art of Love ( Ars Amatoria ) and its sequel Remedies for Love ( Remedia Anwris ) are among the most notorious poems of the ancient world. In AD 8, the emperor Augustus exiled Ovid to the shores of the Black Sea for "a poem and a mistake." Whatever the mistake may have been, the poem was certainly the Ars Amatoria, which the emperor found a bit too immoral. -- In exile, Ovid composed Sad Things ( Tristia ) , which included a defense of his life and work as brilliant and cheeky as his controversial love manuals. In a poem addressed to Augustus ( Tristia 2 ) , he argues, "Since all of life and literature is one long, steamy sex story, why single poor Ovid out?" While seemingly groveling at the emperor's feet, he creates an image of Augustus as Capricious tyrant and himself as suffering artist that wins over every reader ( except the one to whom it was addressed ) . -- Bringing together translations of the Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, and Tristia 2, Julia Dyson Hejduk's The Offense of Love is the first book to include both the offense and the defense of Ovid's amatory work in a single volume. Hejduk's elegant and accurate translations, helpful notes, and comprehensive introduction will guide readers through Ovid's wickedly witty poetic tour of the literature, mythology, topography, religion, politics, and ( of course ) sexuality of ancient Rome. Zustand: Gut. VIII, 186 Seiten / p. - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - In his first book of Satires, written in the late, violent days of the Roman republic, Horace exposes satiric speech as a tool of power and domination. Using critical theories from classics, speech act theory, and others, Catherine Schlegel argues that Horace's acute poetic observation of hostile speech provides insights into the operations of verbal control that are relevant to his time and to ours. She demonstrates that though Horace is forced by his political circumstances to develop a new, unthreatening style of satire, his poems contain a challenge to our most profound habits of violence, hierarchy, and domination. Focusing on the relationships between speaker and audience and between old and new style, Schlegel examines the internal conflicts of a notoriously difficult text. This exciting contribution to the field of Horatian studies will be of interest to classicists as well as other scholars interested in the genre of satire.
