Luis Sepúlveda è nato a Ovalle, in Cile, il 4 ottobre del 1949. È cresciuto a Valparaiso, in Cile, assieme al nonno paterno, un anarchico andaluso fuggito in Sud America, e uno zio. I suoi genitori erano in fuga perché suo padre era stato denunciato dal nonno paterno per motivi politici. Il nonno e lo zio glia hanno trasmesso l'amore per il romanzo d'avventura. Da piccolo Luis Sepúlveda leggeva i libri di Salgari, Conrad e Melville. A scuola iniziò a scrivere racconti per il giornalino scolastico e all'età di quindici anni si iscrisse a gioventù comunista. Due anni più tardi iniziò a lavorare per radio e quotidiani. Nel 1969 con il suo primo libro di racconti "Cronacas de Pedro Nadie", vinse il Premio Casa de las Americas e una borsa di studio di 5 anni per studiare all'Università di Mosca. La sua esperienza nell'Unione Sovietica durò solo pochi mesi, in quanto venne espulso a causa di contatti con alcuni dissidenti. Tornato in Cile, lasciò la casa paterna e venne espulso da gioventù comunista. Trasferitosi in Bolivia, fu membro dell' Eiército de Liberaciòn Nacional. Dopo un periodo trascorso in Bolivia, torna in Cile e consegue il diploma come regista teatrale. Iscrittosi al partito socialista, diventa anche guardia personale del Presidente Salvador Allende. Con il colpo di Stato di Augusto Pinochet, Luis Sepúlveda venne arrestato e torturato e venne liberato sette mesi dopo grazie alle pressioni di Amnesty International. Una volta libero, riprese riprese ad esprimere le sue idee politiche attraverso il teatro. Incarcerato nuovamente, fu condannato all'ergastolo, ma poi, sempre grazie ad Amnesty International, la pena fu commutata in esilio. Tra il 1977 e il 1978 viaggiò molto per il Sud America, fu in Brasile, Ecuador, Uruguay e Paraguay. Visse per sette mesi a contatto con gli indios Shuar. Nel 1979 si unì alle Brigate Internazionali Simon Bolivar che combattevano in Nicaragua. Dopo la vittoria, ricominciò a lavorare come giornalista e in seguito si trasferì in Europa. Dopo un periodo trascorso ad Amburgo, si spostò in Francia dove prese la cittadinanza. Dal 1982 al 1987 si imbarcò su una nave di Greenpeace e dal 1989 potè tornare in Cile. Il suo primo romanzo è dello stesso anno, e si intitola "Il vecchio che leggeva romanzi d'amore". Dopo il successo, ha pubblicati altri numerosi romanzi, raccolte di racconti e libri di viaggio, tra cui "Storia di una gabbianella e del gatto che le insegnò a volare" (1996).
