"Alastair Mackie was born in 1925 in Aberdeen and died in 1995 in Anstruther, where he taught English. Apart from a spell in Orkney, teaching at Stromness Academy, he remained an east-coaster and imbibed its working-class Scots language (town Aberdeen and rural East Neuk) and its keen sense of the sea. On leaving Robert Gordon's College in 1943 he was on active service in the Royal Navy before graduating from Aberdeen Univeristy in 1950 with First Class Honours in English. It was in Stromness in 1954 that George Mackay Brown lent him a copy of MacDiarmid's Sangschaw, and this led to the poetic career that lasted until his death forty years later. In spite of the breadth, wealth and duration of his talent he published only three slim volumes and one selection in his lifetime. He has been called the best and most woefully neglected Scots-writing poet of his generation.".…
