This original handwritten letter, dated October 29, 1888, is penned on official blue-stamped stationery from the Society of Arts (now the Royal Society of Arts) in London. Signed by the institution's long-serving Secretary, H.T. Wood, the letter is addressed to the prominent English Shakespearean scholar and metricist F.G. Fleay. In this fascinating piece of Victorian academic correspondence, Wood formally rejects Fleay's submitted manuscript titled "Harmonies of Sound and Colour," noting that a committee concluded the paper was "not quite suitable for reading before the Society." This document provides a superb historical glimpse into the 19th-century academic peer-review process and the Victorian era's cross-disciplinary fascination with aesthetics and the relationship between sound and visual arts. Transcription (English) Header: "enclosure" (top left) / "SOCIETY OF ARTS, JOHN STREET, ADELPHI. LONDON. W.C. 29th Oct. 1888." Salutation: "Dear Sir," Body: "I am directed by the Council of this Society to inform you that at their last meeting they carefully considered the paper on Harmonies of Sound and Colour which you were good enough to offer them, together with the report of a Committee of their own body to whom the paper had been referred; and that they came to the conclusion that it was not quite suitable for reading before the Society. They therefore instructed me to return you the manuscript, and to thank you for your offer." Sign-off: "Yours faithfully, H.T. Wood, Secretary." Footer: "F.G. Fleay, Esq."
