In den WarenkorbEach 3pp., 12mo, on bifoliums with the first page headed 'Private'. Both in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper with minor staining from paper clip. Letter One: He hopes he will not 'appear wanting in courtesy to yourself or to the Editor of the Morning Post if I say frankly that I had much rather not have any conversation about my coming birthday, which certain old Harrow pupils and friends propose so kindly to celebrate.' He 'must beg' Walton to 'make allowance for my feeling of reserve on so delicate a matter'. Letter Two: He repeats his refusal, adding: 'I have more than once declined proposals from distinguished Publishers to publish incidents of my life, and I must adopt the same course with regard to oral communications however kindly suggested. I greatly prefer to remain unrecorded.' Walton is not named, the letters being both addressed to 'My dear Sir', but the two items are from his papers. Within a few years Walton would be, as his entry in 'Who Was Who' states, 'at Ministry of Munitions, then at Ministry of Food; on Lord Rhondda's personal staff, and later principal Private Secretary to Food Controller; Director of Publicity for Victory Loan in 1919'. For Walton's later and somewhat less meritorious activities, see Keith Middlemas's 'Politics in Industrial Society' (1979).…

He made the recipient's acquaintance when he visited Trinity with 'my friend Mr. John Cox', and Taylor has been 'naturally interested in reading your views on the Irish question as recently delivered at Ely'. He quotes a long passage from the speech as reported in the Cambridge Independent Press, 15 March 1889, He would like to know whether the passage 'represents your statements with substantial accuracy', and to 'learn from you when the present Government "ejected 400,000 souls from their homes" and who are the patriot martyrs whom it "murdered".' He ends by treating the assertion that 'he clergy of the Church of England 'are not Christians' with gentle irony.…

Begins 'The lamented death of Mr. SMYTH having occasioned a vacancy in the Representation of our University, I am induced to offer myself as a Candidate for the honour of succeeding him in that distinguished situation.' He is 'unfettered by political engagements', and must forever feel 'affection and gratitude' for 'a Body, amongst whom I have passed some of the happiest and most profitable years of my life'. Hervey was unsuccessful. According to Cooper's 'Annals of Cambridge' (p.539): 'The election of a Representative in Parliament for the University to supply the vacancy occasioned by the death of J. H. Smyth Esq. took place on the 26th and 27th of November [1822]. The candidates were, William John Bankes Esq., Lord Hervey, and James Scarlett Esq., all of Trinity College. The votes were, Bankes, 419; Hervey, 281; Scarlett, 219.' Three years later Hervey was elected Member of Parliament for Bury St. Edmunds, serving as a Conservative between 1826 and 1859.…

Printed at the University Press. Cover has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on first page. Montagu Butler was the son of a previous Headmaster of Harrow School. Educated at Harrow and Trinity College. He married his second wife in 1888, a very young Agnata Frances Ramsay who in 1887 attained the highest marks in the Classical Tripos at Cambridge. His son was the historian Sir James Butler. A talented and versatile Latinist, Butler achieved fame as one of the most adept British composers of Latin (and Greek) verse in the 19th and 20th centuries. Similarly to his father he served as headmaster of Harrow (1859 to 1885). He was then appointed Dean of Gloucester Cathedral in 1885 and was also Master of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1886 to 1918, Vice Chancellor of the University, 1889-1890. He influenced many young people, including Stanley Baldwin (Prime Minister); Lord Davidson (Archbishop of Canterbury); Galsworthy of the Forsyte Saga; 10 bishops; 17 judges; 4 viceroys; 12 governors; 12 ambassadors; 33 privy councillors; and 64 generals. From 1803 to 1916, young military officers had been trained in conjunction with University education through the Officers Training Corps (OTC), forming the National Reserve of officers. However, due to the unforeseen number of casualties in the first two years of the War, conscription was introduced in 1916 and in the same year the Officer Cadet Battalions (OCBs) were formed. With training no longer conducted alongside University education, the OCBs produced 73,000 commissioned officers at locations around the country, including the 5th OCB, based at Trinity and St. John's. The OCBs cultivated an atmosphere of peacetime University life through sport, amateur drama productions and humorous magazines. The Blunderbuss, the magazine for the 5th Battalion, ran from July 1916 to October 1918, featuring articles, poems, sport results, photographs, artwork and topical humor for the officers in training. Whilst humor provided a way of coping with the strain of preparing for war, sporting competitions within and between battalions fostered the camaraderie and fellowship that would become emblematic of the British army during the War. Understanding the importance of this bond and of instilling leadership, H. Montagu Butler, Master of Trinity, wrote of the 5th OCB: "They will feel that they were wise in Training, not only man by man but together in close league, in the hope of being fitted to lead, to command, to influence, to inspire." As the War progressed, the tone of the magazine remained the same, but notes of solemnity did creep in along with the publication of lists of dead and wounded. However, the bonds of friendship and duty grew to characterize the British Army during the First World War, thanks in part to institutions such as the 5th OCB.…

Humphry objects that 'It is not desirable that the Undergraduates at so early a period of their career, should be invited to compete together for a great prize.' He also feels that 'the Examination will actually attract many Candidates, and so will extensively unsettle the Freshmen in their first Term; will prevent them from attending quietly to the College Lectures, and will take them away from the Lecture Room entirely, during one week of the Term'. In den WarenkorbThe two letters were written on Cunningham's return from America, where he had been lecturing in economic history at Harvard. Both are in good condition, lightly aged. Both are addressed from Trinity College, Cambridge. ONE: 9 October 1899. 2pp., small 4to. He has 'just returned to England after a long absence'. He appreciates 'the honour you have done me in asking me to cooperate in such a work', but regrets 'that it is impossible for me to undertake anything of the kind at present'. TWO: 12 October 1899. 4pp., small 4to. He apologises for not writing 'more definitely at first, as it would have saved you the trouble of farther correspondence'. At the same time, after the recipient's second letter, '& the kind expressions which you quote from the Delegates', he feels that 'a fuller statement is necessary'. He spells out his reasons from declining: 'I have very little time for literary work of any kind, as the claims of my college & my parish are rather heavy, and I am bound to get on with two pretty big undertakings as fast as I can the second volume of my essay on Western Civilisation, & the recasting of the second volume of my Growth of English Industry & Commerce.' On Cunningham's 'most sanguine calculation' the two books together 'will occupy a couple of years at least', and he feel justified in laying either of them aside 'in order to take up another piece of work for a time however tempting it may be'. He asks him to explain to the delegates 'the precise circumstances under which I have declined their flattering invitation'.…

In den WarenkorbSee Napier's entry, and that of his sister Maria's husband John Gellibrand Hubbard (1805-1889), 1st Baron Addington, in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and discoloured, with small closed tear to a crease. Part of letter torn away on opening, and now under small black wax seal (good impression of crest with letter N). Folded four times. Addressed, with three postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'The Rt Honble | The Lady Napier | Kew Green'. Minuted by Lady Napier: 'Cambridge Novr. 1838'. 64 lines of neatly-written text. He greets his mother as 'My dear Mamma', and begins by expressing delight at the arrival of his sister Maria on the previous day, 'though it happened at rather an unfortunate time for my occupations. I am glad to see her looking so very well and wearing her curls, but I miss you very much and I wish you had been able to come along with them.' Despite the fact that 'Cambridge is particularly wet & dirty', Maria and 'Hubbard' (Maria had married John Hubbard, the future Lord Addington, in 1837) breakfasted with him that morning. 'Sedgwick and we sat talking till Church time when we got squeezed into St Mary's and heard Melville preach much worse than usual.' The letter proceeds with references to 'Whewell', Trinity Chapel, 'Thorp', 'the Philosophical society', 'Ld & Lady Fitzalan', 'Lucy', Lady Kinlock. He reports that 'Cambridge was very much shocked by the Duke of Wellington's reported stroke and delighted to hear it was only a cold.' Turning to personal matters he writes: 'Maria is very much cut up about her cook who after appearing to be a pattern of culinary morality for some months has turned out a peculating thief besides having had several children in the house, which she clandestinely conveyed out of the way in the dirty clothes basket'. One of Sedgwick's dog's five puppies is mousing for him. 'Maria says that Sir Alexander has at last gone north and high time it was for I see Mr Ewart has gone down to stand for the boroughs he has been petting so long through Patrick.' He ends by mentioning 'Sir Thomas misfortunes whiuch are so very hard upon his old age but Maria declares that he seems to bear it very cheerfully.' He concludes: 'I write this [dull] letter late at night dear Mother, it is only to announce Maria's happy arrival and I intend to despatch a longer one to 9. this week. Lady Fitz. is pale and plain & Maria cust her out.' The letter is signed 'Napier / Trin. Coll. Sunday 12 o'clock'.…
