In very good condition. - Foreword -- It is a great honour and pleasure for nie to write some words on this book by my two esteemed colleagues G. L. Pandit and H. G. Dosch. As theorists in particle physics we are usually occupied with urgent day to day problems which should be solved in order that a Student can get his Ph. D. or that we can present a talk at some Conference. With this book. however, we are invited to take a step back and get a wider perspective on problem and theory development in the Sciences, in particular in physics. How and why did the great "revolütions" in the physical Sciences come about? How are the problems in physics, asked at various times, determined by the "reigning" theories of the time? What are the philosophical implications of progress in the Sciences? Are we aiming at one great unified theory which one day will explain "everything" or will the quest for a "fundamental theory'' be open ended? In the book by Pandit and Dosch the reader finds all these and many related questions posed with great clarity. The answers given by the authors are corroborated by important case studies. This is very much in the good tradition of physics that Statements must be validated by experimental facts. The novel perspectives of the authors on theory development in Science may clash with the cherished views of some philosophical schools. It is my hope that this book will lead both philosophers and physicists to critically examine their own positions with respect to the fundamental questions posed above. The authors achieve to show up the scientific frontiers in the relation of philosophy and the physical Sciences from within these disciplines. I wish the authors that their book will lead to new questions and to further developments at the frontier of philosophy and physics, where - as in physics itself. as stressed repeatedly in the book - we certainly should aim at unification. -- Otto Nachtmann.
