In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Second Edition [stated]. [6], 183, [1] pages. Illustrations. Chronology. Footnotes. Index. Some chips and small pieces missing to dust jacket. Daniel Carroll Toomey is considered a leading authority on the Civil War in Maryland. A graduate of the University of Mar…yland, he is the author or co-author of ten books relating to that subject including The Civil War in Maryland, Baltimore During the Civil War, and The Maryland Line Confederate Soldiers Home. This book is a chronology of military operations and major political events within the state of Maryland. Its aim is two-fold. First, to dramatize the involvement and importance of Maryland, the smallest border state, during the first year of the war. Second, to recount, for the first time, over 150 battles, skirmishes, and minor military operations that occurred throughout the state. The state of Maryland had not seen an organized military operation since the War of 1812. Therefore, the attack on Harpers Ferry in October of 1859 by John Brown had the political shock waves of a major earthquake. It significantly separated the North from the South by making the Northern Abolitionist's supposed threat on the southern way of life a reality. The combination of location and personalities involved was a terrible and accurate foretelling of the bitter Civil War that would soon engulf the country. Maryland, as did other border states, had contributed significantly to both sides in men, money, and personal suffering, which exemplified the real tragedy of the American Civil War.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. [3], vii, 327, [1] pages. Maps. Illustrations. Appendices. Endnotes. Index. Format is approximately 8.75 inches by 11.25 inches. George T. Ness Jr. was a lawyer and a history teacher at Polytechnic Institute for many years. He was a founder of the Civil War Round Table of Baltimore, now known as th…e Baltimore Round Table of American Military History, he was also the author of a book, "The Regular Army on the Eve of the Civil War." He was a founder of the committee for the Maryland Union Room, a museum collection now housed at the 5th Regiment Armory, and a member of the Loyal Order of the Legion. Captured within these pages is in an era of United States Military History long neglected and misunderstood, yet so basic and primary to a full appreciation of America's most compelling conflict - the Civil War. For the first time, a scholarly, detailed and comprehensive study of the United States Regular Army in the dark decade preceding the explosion of the Civil War is presented here. The tiny armed force of the nation, spread from far outposts on the American western frontier to the bustling streets of Washington D.C., is examined. The shear volume of biographical information on these early officers is invaluable for the student of the Civil War. Many of these officers, destined to be stellar personalities, achieving national notoriety will be found here with mere company grade commissions. Likewise, others carrying higher rank and greater command will be swallowed by the smoke of Fort Sumpter's guns. First Printing [Stated]. Presumed first printing.
